Voice PE breaks on power loss

I finally received my Voice Assistant PE today and got it set up in HA. Things seemed to be going well until I unplugged it to move it to another room. Upon plugging it back in, the ring turned bright white, then tried to start the color patterns it did when first starting, but it was sporadic and flashing randomly. It never came back up.

One factory reset later (and deletion from ESPHome) and it was back up… until I unplugged it and plugged it back in, then it did the same thing all over.

Also, I noticed when it was working, it really picked up everything the TV was saying even though I am sitting right next to it. I had to mute my TV to give it commands.

So, has anyone had the same power issue? Is my unit defective?

Thanks!
Paul

I don’t think I will be much help, but I just tested this out on my VAPE, simply uplugged the USB, waited 10 secs or so and plugged it back in, and it came back up no problem.

If I had to guess, either WiFi signal strength is a factor, or your USB adapter is just on the edge of putting out enough current…but just guesses.

Thanks for your input. It’s definitely not the adapter or my wifi. To update, I emailed Ameridroid about the issue and they suggested I flash the latest firmware, which I did. I added it back to HA and it seemed to be ok, until I closed the web browser (at which point I heard a very faint click from the unit), then the ring lit up solid white and it wouldn’t respond to anything, until I flashed it again, close browser, white ring, ad nauseum… I tried different cables, my laptop UBS port, and two different USB power adapters.

I’m giving up at this point. Hopefully a replacement will resolve both of these issues.

Hi Paul67, dumb question, but is the Wi-Fi you are trying to connect the Voice PE to a hidden SSID?

There is a known ‘issue’ where if the SSID you are connecting it to is hidden, and you are using the standard firmware, a power cut or reboot will cause the device to NOT reconnect to the SSID.

I say ‘issue’ because it’s a known thing with ESPHome’s WiFi code, of which Voice PE depends. There is away around this by flashing a YAML with your SSID using ESPHome Device Builder Add-on.
