Water leaks/device availability (Matter)

newbie, so pardon any confusion/inconsistencies.

The issue is one of slight water leaks (toilets, sinks), likely not enough water to be detected by a leak detector per se, but think a hygrometer may be better option. Larger size home area to cover so (initially) thought Matter devices would be best (limited/minimal options for devices, however). Interested in eventually doing more, in terms of smart home devices, so thought Matter was way to go longterm, purchased ZBT-2, set it up, bought a couple Matter smart plugs to see if things worked (seem to work fine).

Essentially, the issue is lack of hygrometer devices which are Matter compatible, at lesser cost.

Question:

  1. abandon Matter (at present) and go with Zigbee (using ZBT-2)?
  2. purchase Zigbee dongle and hygrometers (and more repeaters) to access current hygrometer array avaiable, and await Matter maturation and device availability?
  3. ??

Thanks for any insight. Figured others may be in same situation with decison making conundrum.

Considering Zigbee isn’t go anywhere, in fact, there will be an upgrade to the protocol in the near future that adds security fixes and support for long-range devices while maintaining backwards-compatibility, Zigbee just might be the way to go as there are WAY MORE options for devices. Thread has been slow-walked into production (one would think for the better), but I’ve seen many complaints about it.

Many climate devices have a hydrometer bulti-in, which is really a hygrometer.
Aqara W100 climate display is such Matter over Thread device.

Not sure if it can really be used for your case, because it takes some time to register an increase in the air humidity and wall paper, wood, like wood floors, and the like will absorp for hw humidity too and slow the increase.

I think a leak detector and maybe a bucket or tray to gather the moisture is a better solution.
IKEA have a leak detector for Matter over Thread now.

If it is dishwashers, washing machines and the like, then there are often trays made for these.

Here is an example.
