What can AI really do with Home Assistant beyond controlling devices and creating automations?

AI is everywhere these days — writing code, designing layouts, you name it. So I started wondering: can AI manage my smart home too?

Yesterday, I integrated AI into Home Assistant. It works — I can chat with AI right inside HA, ask about device statuses and so on. But after playing with it, I realized this isn’t really what I want.

What I actually want is the other way around: I want to talk to AI from an external AI client, and have it control HA. Specifically:

  • The AI should be able to access my HA devices, entities, and their info — know what’s in my home and what state things are in
  • I want to describe what I need in plain language, and have it build automations for me — and they should work immediately, without me manually editing config files
  • For example, if I say “turn off all lights at 10 PM if no one’s home,” it should just create that automation and have it active

So I want to ask the community:

  1. What are your thoughts on AI controlling HA? Is anyone doing something similar?
  2. Beyond controlling devices and creating automations, what else could AI do with HA? Some ideas I’ve been thinking about:
  • Proactively suggesting optimizations based on usage patterns (e.g., “You keep forgetting to turn off the living room lights — want me to add an auto-off rule?”)
  • Generating dashboard layouts from natural language descriptions
  • Analyzing energy usage data and suggesting ways to save
  • Automatically adjusting existing automations based on seasonal or schedule changes
  • What else?
  1. How else could AI make using HA more convenient?

I feel like AI + HA is still in its early stages, and I’d love to hear your thoughts and ideas.

The more time goes the less im impressed with “AI”.
In the beggining i experimented with ollama and local ai models. Abondoned it as it is using way to much comp resources then my old comp can handle.
Maybe some are using it and will tell you its a great thing to have, but I dont think so.
As i saw, if you want anything usefull you will have to use payed version of some ai. It can be integrated but again it is your decision will you allow some program runnig on the cloud to have full access to your personal data and your home.
To me this is way more corporate hype than anything else. With ai you are just playing guessing game based on the data it was trained on.
