What determines if a device is considered a "switch" or a "light"

I’m confused…I have Leviton Switches and a Leviton Dimmer. Both control different lights.

I’m trying a Blueprint for the first time to use a motion sensor to activate a switch. Only the Dimmer appears as a valid item in the default Blueprint that comes with HA and the Blueprint prevents me from manually entering any other device. What gives?

HA considers the Dimmer a “Light” but a switch isn’t a light? Makes no sense to me.

How do I re-label a device as a “Light”?

In HA, a switch can only be “on” or “off”… a dimmer provides other values, so it can’t be a switch.
