So I’m not advocating for any particular implementation, as each implementation has a lot of pros and cons. But, I am curious what the plan is for handling devices that don’t fit into one specific area, maybe they span multiple areas, or even multiple floors.
As of right now, the only option is pick an area for the device, which is not correct, or don’t choose an area at all.
So, is the plan to do nothing (safest choice), give it a little more time and do analysis on user data or other user research, wait until the masses finally converge on exactly what they want (never will happen), or is it kinda known what the solution will be but there’s a ton of groundwork to be done before that particular implementation can be done?
I have an alarm system panel with many physical sensors distributed throughout the house.
The alarm system panel is represented as a device in Home Assistant. Its sensors are represented as entities belonging to the device.
I assign the alarm system panel to the area where it is physically located (Wiring Closet). Naturally this automatically assigns all its entities to the same area. I assign each entity to the area where it is actually located (Kitchen, Garage, etc).
I believe the ability to independently assign a device to one area and its entities to other areas is about all the flexibility the development team foresees as necessary to handle most scenarios.
