When trying to use a backup, i get encryption key is wrong

Just did a fresh install from another crashed HA instance and I was trying to use a backup from the cloud. The only backup I had was from Dec 25. I put in my encryption key and it say it was wrong. I tried doing a manual backup that i downloaded and I get the same error. I copied and pasted the key as well as typing it in manually with the same result. I have had HA for quite some time but have never successfully been able to use a backup. Any help appreciated.

I believe the backup encryption method was ‘improved’ in the April 2026 changes, so that the current backups could be protected from future decryption when quantum computing brought the decryption cycle down for unknown keys to a manageable few minutes.

I don’t recall the recovery method for those, like yourself, caught in the transition zone. Maybe the key was changed or regenerated, maybe not.

There may be a GitHub bug report on this issue already.

A backup you cannot restore is the ultimate frustration - your hopes soar when you discover you have one, and are dashed when you discover it cannot be restored.

I’d love to be able to suggest rolling back to last months software and restoring your backup using that, but there appears to be a fatal flaw in doing that too…

Sad to hear, but TY for the reply.

The release notes may offer some clarity.
