Where can I find a smart wall light switch that HA can control directly instead of a cumbersome Alexa Dot light switch unit that requires work arounds?

Also, does it need to be a wall switch or can it be a small device to be mounted behind the wall switch? The latter opens up way more options.

Shelly devices are pretty good and have perfect HA integration. They are available for Wifi, Bluetooth, Zigbee and Wave. And with existing Wifi available, I see no reason not to go for that.
For your use case, the red ones (“1PM”) are the right ones. The Minis are fine, they are extra small and have an 8 amp limit (900W). The smallness makes it easier to shove them behind wall switches and 900W should be plenty for lights.

That switch is 99% a Tuya device. There’s an integration for it, but I’d recommend you read up on Tuya first
I think the hardware is half of the puzzle, right now I am struggling with how it receive or intercept the SimpliSafe motion detection banners that I we currently receive on our smart phones, for use to trigger and action?
