Which Roller Shutter Actuator - Shelly Gen3, Gen4, or Sonoff? Wi-Fi or Zigbee?

Hi everyone,

I’m looking for suitable actuators for 10 roller shutters spread across two floors, and I’ve narrowed it down to the following options:

  • Shelly 2PM Gen4 (Wi-Fi, Zigbee)
  • Shelly 2PM Gen3 (Wi-Fi)
  • SONOFF SON MINI-RBS (Wi-Fi)

What’s important to me:

  • Reliability
  • Easy to get started (I don’t have any smart home hardware yet, but planning for HA in future)

Because of the ease of getting started, I’m currently leaning toward a Wi-Fi option, since I haven’t set up Home Assistant yet (and don’t have enough time for it right now due to the renovation) and I’m planning to use mesh repeaters connected via LAN in the house anyway.

I’m also just getting completely started with smart home technology, which means I don’t have any existing devices. However, I’m planning to use about 14 Shelly Dimmer Gen4 dimming actuators for the lights - initially in Wi-Fi mode, but eventually switching to Zigbee in future to reduce the load on the Wi-Fi network. If I do end up using Zigbee, it would of course be great if the roller shutter actuators could also serve as repeaters for it, but I’ve been reading about many issues with the Shelly 2PM Gen4 in this regard.

Generally speaking, the Shelly 2PM Gen4 seems exactly like what I need on paper, but I often read about issues with connection reliability, especially when using Zigbee. If Zigbee isn’t stable anyway, I could just go with a Wi-Fi-only option like the Shelly 2PM Gen3 or the Sonoff, since that would be significantly cheaper.

What are your experiences, and which one would you recommend?

EDIT:

I also toyed with the idea of using Z-Wave actuators for the roller shutters (because they’re considered very reliable?), but I decided against it because of the more difficult and expensive setup, as well as the lack of long-term prospects.

If wifi is ok and price difference between gen 3/4 noticeable, go with Shelly gen3. Shelly is local out of the box and pretty good overall.

I use Shelly Pro Dual Shutters/Covers, Ethernet connected. Reliability: 100%, but of course depends if you can run the wire.

I am using Shelly 2.5 and Shelly 2PM devices for several years now in my smarthome and i can really recommend them. Especially if you dont already have a smart home infrastructure. The can do some things out of the Box like Schedules etc. and you can easily use them with any Third Party cloud.
