Whole home Power Monitoring (from switchboard)

I want to set up some whole-home power monitoring and as part of a solar + battery install + 3-phase upgrade.

I just purchased a 1915 free-standing single-level house in inner Sydney. The electricity usage is pretty substantial (~35kw / day - when being conservative with electrity) so getting solar is obvious, and given we're pretty close to the edge of what single-phase can deliver, we might as well install 3-phase now, so our inverter/battery are future proofed.

Our circuit board is a complete fucking mess, and it will probably be easier for the sparky to rebuild it rather than trying get the additional circuits and 3-phase ugrades into the existing configuration. So, given that we already need new breakers and RCBO's is there such a thing as a Power Monitoring breaker that talks to home assistant?

What I've found so far:

  • Emporia Vue 3 - CT clamps with 16 50A sensors. Flashing to ESPHome is a bit of a pain, but at least it's possible. Ethernet. Dirt cheap at ~$200 USD
  • Refoss EM16P - Similar to above, but with 16A sensors and supports OpenAPI. WiFi Only. Dirt cheap at ~$160 USD
  • EnergyMe-Home - Similar to above, but fully open. ~129€
  • Shelly 3EM Pro and Shelly Pro EM-50 - Seems like a much better option - but at $135 AUD each, I'd need like 8 to monitor 16 circuits (I think?)
  • Shelly Pro 1CB C16A - These are Smart breakers - they monitor voltage, but I can't tell if they monitor power. I can't tell if these are certified for Australia either. $141 each.

By the way, I currently have ~16 circuits, but will have a few more once solar is installed.

Another option you can look into is one of these from Kincony: 16 Channel CT Clamp Energy Monitor – Smart Home Automation | KinCony

It's ESP Home based and has 16 channels for your current setup needs, after that you can look into adding another one or just a 3EM for smaller setups.

I currently live in a FACS housing unit and was hoping to integrate the 3EM into the setup I have but due to how the meter-board is setup its not an easy integration, can't even do it via the switchboard in the home due to it being near impossible for the electrician to inspect the internals.

Currently I use the Red Energy integration another user put together for us to pull in data from the smart meter for my unit and account with them but it only updates like 4am each day.

It's up to you what and how you want to monitor, but in my opinion monitoring individual circuits is not really so exciting. They are usually not individual appliances and often not even logical groups in old house.
Total whole home and A.C. gives essential info.
Your solar inverter already monitors itself and you will quite likely integrate it to HA. Most inverters monitor whole home total as well.

I suggest you look at Open Energy Monitor. These guys really know what they're doing and they're really helpful! You can feed the data to HA. And, yes, it will monitor 3Φ. (Not dirt cheap ~USD$859.23 for 12 circuits)

I have one of these and I'm about to install another. Let me give you an example. I have CTs (current transformers) on all my big consumers (and, of course, the source, where energy comes in). We have a room where I take tea in the morning, but it's cold so brought in an electric heater. I wanted to know how much energy I'm using during that period. I'd have to put a CT on that circuit, right? But, no, I don't! I make a virtual circuit of the the source and subtract off all of the other circuits that do have CTs. Voilà!

I used that information to guide me on how to use the heater efficiently. From about 5kWh to about 0.5kWh!

Oh, and for sure, rebuild that panel! I own a 1906 house, with a really funky 100A panel. Because of it's funkiness, I was able to reconfigure it to be able to distribute power as if it were a 200A panel. (I'm an unlicensed sparky). I also replaced the knob-and-tube and oil-insulated wiring. I don't thinking about the f***ing mess any more.

I'm also a certified solar installer. What we learned in our certification class was that conservation is the most cost effective way to reduce your energy usage. I did probably all the techniques, insulation, double paned windows, heat pump, sealing outlets and switches, fixing doors, etc. Cut my energy usage by half. Lifestyle changes reduced it more.

Do these things and you'll give serious consideration of going off-grid.
