Wired, WiFi, ZigBee and zWave: best practice

hi All,

I am quite new to this amazing world… I have started with:

  • Raspberrt Pi3B+
  • ZigBee Usb (eBay cheap deal)
  • 4 IKEA lightbulbs
  • 4 Sonoff DIW ZigBee Switchs
  • 2 wifi Sonoff Switchs
  • 1 Wyze cam (RTSP firmawre)
  • 1 Samsung Smart TV
  • 1 Google Home Mini

I want take the home automation to the next level  and I was thinking

  • door lock
  • water solenoid
  • motion sensor
  • temperature sensor

Now, my current setting is pretty much composed by wired (e.g. Samsung TV), Wifi and Zigbee only, while some devices in my wish list are zWave… does it make sense to have a “mix it all” environment or is better to stay on fewer standards… how many of you have Zigbee and zWave mixed? and what is the best zWave USB dongle (cheap and DIY if possible)?

Thank you all

Yes…

But seriously, that question is best answered by your preferences and availability of hardware to do what you need.

I have a mix of all three (z wave, signed and wifi/mqtt) And I’m happy with that. It does provide me with some flexibility in getting hardware since I already have all three protocol controllers.

Since you already have a signed stick you can just get the aeotec zwave stick.

Or you can get the HUSBZB-1 which has both radios in it and then you will have a backup signed controller. I actually have exactly the opposite situation. I bought an aeotec z wave stick first then bought the HUSBZB-1 later for the signed part. So now I have a backup z wave radio too.
