Wiring Help (Thermostat & Switch)

Could anyone please help me wire this up.

Trying to use the old thermostat as a backup so I’m adding the zigbee switch to it. The idea came from another user on here.

The Switch is Sonoff ZBMini extreme, (ZBMINIR2)
The Theormostat is a honeywell

According to wiring diagrams this should work.

I’ve tried both neutrals with the following.

  • 1 to live in, 3 to live out
  • 1 to live out, 3 to live in
  • 1 to live in 3 to S1

I don’t get any power through to the switch at all. I’m not comfortable with experimenting further without someone more experienced guiding me.

Thanks in advance

Once it is working it will be tidied up and enclosed in its own 3D printed box above it. :v:

You seem to have shared a 1x1 pixel image.

My bad, I think I created the post before it finished uploading. Should be working now.

It was some time as i used something like this but as I remember you have to power switch from the mains, at least neutral and live on one side of the terminal, and neutral and live for output.
So you will have to have 4 wires, 2 going into the switch for power, and 2 going into device that will be controlled by this switch.
But i’m writing this by my memory, so please check it out.
Edit:
Although I’m not an american but i dont understand why do you think that you will be able to control thermostat with this?
Maybe you can switch thermostat on or off if this is working like that but that will be all.

Neither am I
Rented property in the UK. Landlord won’t let touch the boiler. It’s a fairly new boiler under warranty. No idea why it’s wired into this old thermostat.

So, I’m restricted with what I can/can’t do.
The thermostat is only an on/off switch anyway so this seems to be the simplest solution I can think off.

If that’s the case, I’m gunna need to rethink this idea. I won’t be able to get any live wires where the themorstat is.

Well ok if you think that this will help you but those switches can only turn something on or off as i know.
I dont know why 3 wires are connected to this thermostat. Maybe it needs 3 wires for working but if it so then 3 wires should go to switch as input and 3 wires should go from switch to thermostat as output.
Basically this is how those switches are working.
This is like the middle man between mains and device that you want to control but this middle man can then be controled over wifi or zigbee or whatever and in that way you can control device that you connected to this switch.

From what I understand about the thermostat (which isn’t much).
these wires should be, live in from the mains, live out to the boiler, and neutral.

The thermostat is only an on/off switch anyway. Nothing more. (the dial only connects or disconnects the circuit at the desired temperature.

In theory, I should be able to disconnect the three wires from the thermostat straight into the zigbee switch as a replacement but I still wanna use the thermostat as a failsafe if home assistant goes down.

Im not electrician but for this to work you will need 4 wires only. Leave that wire that is going to boiler alone.
Wire live and neutral to the switch as input from mains and live and neutral from the switch to the thermostat as the output.
This should power this switch on and give you ability to turn this thing on or off. But it should be able to work in manual mode also.

I will give this try when I’m back home from work. If it doesn’t work, I’m gunna get an electrician around and will post the results :+1:t2:

Thank you for your help

Just connect live and neutral from the mains to this switch. Dont connect anything else. If it is powering up then it is working.
Turn off the electricity and connect live and neutral from the switch to the thermostat.
That should give you ability to control it remotely.
Good luck.

Okay, I tried your suggestion and it tripped the electrics in the house. I called an electrician who tested the wires and they are not pulling the correct voltages.

effectively we’ve discovered that the wiring to the boiler and thermostat are faulty. So this idea is shelved for now.

At least you found out that you have a faulty wiring.
