Workarounds for mqtt.publish action in scripts called from frontend?

With HA 2026.10 (currently in beta), the mqtt.publish action is limited to users with administrator status.

I use this action in scripts for our robot vacuums (all with custom firmware via Valetudo), including setting the number of repeats on a room clean, or selecting a sequence of rooms to be cleaned. These scripts are called from buttons on various dashboards.

This precise functionality is not immediately reproducible using HA’s built-in actions for vacuums (or at least if it is, it is not evident to me).

With this change, I am now effectively the only one in the household who can operate our vacuums with these scripts from a dashboard.

Any suggestions for workarounds? (I assume the change is here to stay).

Set-up an automation to run the action, the trigger being the button…

Also it is better to ask about beta in the beta post: 2026.10 Beta week
Things are in flux and everything you see there may not make it to release.

Thanks for tip. It didn’t seem that straightforward to implement, but managed it. The original point of using a script which contains the mqtt.publish action was that it allowed to set parameters for the script such as which vacuum to use (we have 3), which area/floor and so on. So it wasn’t just a simple matter of calling the action on its own.

So now I have a button calling a custom event which triggers an automation which calls the original script. Probably far more complicated than it actually needs to be :person_shrugging:.

Oh and I came here from that thread due to petro’s suggestion:

Yes, I asked for people to create support threads.

Beta is not for support, beta threads are for feedback about beta features.
