WTH Intercom between ESPHome & Phone App (for smart doorbell)

Now we have some amazing voice capability in HA, could all that experience (especially with the hardware) be used to create am intercom between an ESPHome device and the HA phone app?

Together with video streams, this would enable private ‘smart’ doorbell to be created.

I would really like to see an intercom or “drop-in” feature for voice assistants. I don’t think the esps have enough compute to have a bi directional video stream for a FaceTime like setup, but audio only should be doable.

I’d agree, ESPs are not well suited to video - but they don’t need to be. A separate camera stream can provide the video (if required), the ESP only needs to provide the two-way audio and the button push.
