The requirement is that you have setup Xiaomi.

You a right the documentation is not very good in this point. You found this one:

It’s part of the xiaomi gateway and this component controls the internal light of the xiaomi gateway. There are no additional devices support. Since HA 0.53 there is a new light component for “Xiaomi Philips Lights” and my be you are looking for the yeelights component to control a yeelight?
