Z-Wave devices turning on randomly

I’m having a strange issue over the last day or so. My z-wave plug in switches have started randomly turning on (mostly lights, but one is a dust extraction system in my workshop that draws a lot of power and could potentially overheat if I didn’t notice). It looks like all devices turn on at the same time as if they’re getting an ‘all-on’ signal.

I can’t see any pattern to it, and eventually I’ve just pulled my z-wave usb dongle out so that home assistant isn’t even in the mix.

Coincidentally, at the same time I had some zigbee issues where devices dropped off the network and needed re-adding (wall sockets, environment sensors, light switches)

Could this be some kind of RF interference? I don’t have any z-wave groups set up apart from on our thermostat. Any ideas on how I can trace this issue?

Interferes do not come with commands. There 2 possible things to look at, 1 if you have any automation running that is turning on the device. If you look at the device log it will tell you what turned it on if it was an automation.

2nd is ,“state after powerfailure” or such, check the device configuration and see what it it’s state after power failure. You could be getting some power fluctuations that the device interrupts as power failure and returning to this default setting.

With the z-wave dongle unplugged, no automations should trigger anything.

And I did think about power interuptions, but there hasn’t been any and I also changed the settings to always off after power failure just in case, but they’re still turning on.

I’m utterly baffled by all this.

At this point, I’m wondering if one of the devices I’ve got is faulty and somehow sending out a signal to turn things on.

If it’s happening without HA and without the controller running, it’s the power in your house. If it’s happening without HA and with the controller running, it could be group associations.

Check the setting for state after power failure. For me I had a device turning off randomly frequently. I had 2 problems, one faulty wiring, it was a switch by the door that got a lot of moisture and corroded the components, so it would short out randomly but not trip the breakers. Second, the device on the same circuit had power off after failure, so when there was a power glitch, the device would stay off. I didn’t know what was going on since it was a little glitch, when it got worse, I changed the switch.

So I may have sorted it.

Looks like one of the plug in units was faulty. I’ve had that one unplugged for the last 12 hours and not had any random turn ons.

Not sure how that was happening. The other devices were all set to ‘always off’ so was pretty sure it wasn’t a power glitch.
