Zigbee dimmers for recessed lights in a new office build

I’m building out a new home office and will be installing 4-6 recessed lights wired in pairs. I want to be able to turn each pair off and on plus dim them. I am currently using the Kasa switches elsewhere, but want to move to locally controlled devices on my Zigbee network for this office.

I don’t want/need color controls or anything crazy, just the ability to turn on/off and dim them. I’d love to have these switches in a small form factor rather than a 3 gang outlet.

Is there anything out there that fits the bill? I see a lot of zigbee multi switches such as the MOES that have up to 4 switches in a single gang, but they don’t dim.

I don’t mind dimming through an app, so I had considered using a MOES-type switch for power on/off and a shelly or maybe a smart bulb to dim, but I don’t think I’ve seen a Shelly that works with Zigbee and dims. I’ve looked at a ton of bulbs/switches/etc.They are all running together and becoming a blur in my mind.

Any thoughts on how to pull this off without too many individual switches or breaking the bank?

Thanks

My suggestion would be to put a dimming module in the ceiling for each pair of (dumb) lights. Then use whatever smart switch you want to trigger an automation which powers on/off your lights. This would give you power control at the switch and dimming via HA app.

If you want dimming control directly from the switch, your options are limited to 2 unfortunately, and both have their drawbacks:

  • Philips Hue Tap Dial - covers all your requirements but is battery powered.
  • This project - essentially a custom Tap Dial project with mains input, but is still in prototype stage.

Thanks. That makes sense.

I was a little concened about removing power to a dimming module through the switch, or were you talking about just using the swtich with no load attached for signalling to HA, then to the dimmer modules?

I was referring to this ^^

Finding a 3 gang dimmer will be next to impossible unless you decide to settle for 2 gangs.
