I’m searching for some Zigbee Gateway Wifi-Zigbee.
In the past I tried the Sonoff Zigbee 3.0 stick, but my walls are that thick, that I couldn’t use any device outside, because the signal quality was that bad outside.
So it would be perfect to have some IP-certified Wifi-Zigbee-Gateway.
Wifi is available, because I have an wifi-access point outside.
Please clarify exactly what your current situation is and what problem you are trying to solve.
A Wifi-Zigbee Gateway on its own will not fix your issues because you can’t stick it inside the house and expect the zigbee signal to reach your outside devices through the wifi network. For it to work, you would need to set up a separate zigbee installation & put the gateway outside the house.
Tell us more about:
Your current setup
Which Zigbee integration you’re using
How many zigbee devices you have inside the house vs outside
I suspect you don’t have enough router devices in the mesh to help providie a stable connection to the outside, you can invest in zigbee based outdoor smart sockets or relay’s to put behind the ones you want to keep as is to replace any that you have so they can act as routing devices for the rest.
I’m not using Zigbee anymore.
I made some tests in the past, but in house it didn’t made sense to me, cause I have a fully working KNX-TP network for home automation.
If I would use it all over the house, with many devices, I could imagine, that the network coverage would be sufficient. But cause I don’t need it at all, I don’t use it anymore.
When I tested it in the past, I also tried to get some connection outside, behind the wall. But that didn’t work.
So I just need a solution for outdoor stuff. Like sockets, irrigation system, lights and so on.
And you are right @tmjpugh, I searched for some home assistant compatible irrigation valve and found directly many zigbee-devices which were also cheap.
But actual I’m open for any systems which meets my requirements, because it would be a new system anyway.
Okay perhaps I should tell more about the “problems” I have to solve:
I have a greenhouse, which is about 50m away from my house. The greenhouse has a power supply and there is also a water pipe.
At the greenhouse I need a valve to switch the irrigation system, which is already installed. Wifi is also available at the greenhouse.
I have several things, which I would like to switch outside. Sockets, lights and so on, which are located all over about 3000m² / ≈32300ft². They don’t have their own supply line, which could be controlled by a central point. They can only be switched at the point of action.
I thought, that this is exactly, for what zigbee was designed.
But other systems are also possible - sure. DIY also, but I don’t want to work on hardware level.
I don’t know of any weather rated zigbee hub/coordinator. You’d probably need to look at something like an ethernet coordinator placed inside your own housing. Heat still would be an issue where I live.
Some variant of “I need zigbee in an outbuilding/garage/shed/etc” is almost a weekly question. Historical recommendation is to establish a second zigbee net using an ethernet/wifi coordinator along with z2m. If it’s a few light bulbs then wifi would be easiest. If you need battery devices, then a second zigbee net or maybe matter over thread would be best. Battery WiFi devices generally suck.
For the yard lghts, if there is enough always-on device density to have a stable mesh, the outdoor coordinator might work. Zigbee is low power and is not good for long point to point distances.
