So my zigbee devices say they have a software upgrade. When I start the upgrade, the download increases a couple percent then times out. I have written a script to do this iteratively (download a couple percent, timeout, wait 2 minutes, and do it again) and have successfully upgrade the devices. Is there a way to get HA to do this out of the box?
Can't say I've ever had that issue, but just to be clear - you're not updating a bunch of devices at once, are you? If so, that's a sure way for the updates to fail.
You also don't mention whether these are battery devices or mains powered, nor the specific models. Battery devices tend to go to sleep, but I've done 3 updates on 2 different battery powered devices this year & I haven't had any issues with the update timing out.
You can try playing around with the advances OTA settings mentioned here. Don't worry, these settings are available in the OTA screen, so you don't have to mess around with yaml configs unless you want to.

Thanks for the pointer, but I am looking for something like "timeout to give up" Essentially a few percent of the image is downloaded ok, then the update times out. I wait 120 seconds and restart, and it downloads a few more percent and then gives up and so on....
What device models? Also, anything in the Z2M logs?
This update window says "the ThirdReality Smart Plug Gen1, Smart Plug Gen2, or Smart Plug E2 (3RSP019BZ, 3RSP02028BZ, or 3RSPE01044BZ) to v1.01.01"
I don't see and Z2M logs when I run "ha host logs identifiers" Where would I find them?
I'm guessing by your reply that you're trying to update them from within HA. Have you ever tried to update them inside Z2M > OTA screen? I've never had an issue with that.
Again, those would be found within the Z2M interface. You'll either get a notification on the top right, or else something will be written in the Z2m logs .
OK, I am using ZHA not Z2M. I don't see any specific logs (or the ability to set more verbose logging).
Try moving the device closer to your zigbee point, then installing.
