I just got notification in homeassistant that there was new firmware for my Zooz ZSE50 z-wave chime. But when I clicked to update it, I got this error popup:
Failed to perform the action update/install. zwave_error: Z-Wave error 263 - Cannot update firmware for node 45: The update is for a different original firmware version! (ZW0263)
Is this a homeassistant problem – like it downloaded the wrong firmware – or is this a Zooz problem, i.e., get their tech support involved? It’s not a me problem – I haven’t done anything crazy with the firmware like side-loading something with a programming port, etc.
PS That z-wave error popup didn’t stay popped up very long, and I didn’t even notice the failure until my third try and I kept my eyes glued to the web interface . . . I kept thinking I didn’t click hard enough or something . . .
PPS It’s a cool annunciator, BTW, and the first z-wave chime device I’ve tried that actually worked as described.
First determine what fw version you have. That’ll tell you want version of the device you have (500 series, 700 series or 800 series). Then look at the version you were trying to update to and if that’s compatible for the model device you have.
I never did figure out what PeteRage meant w.r.t. series numbers, and later, despite the HA popup error about not updating the firmware, it eventually did get updated when I wasn’t looking and without my further intervention.
It also messed up the chime when that happened, and it stopped working as expected. The sounds were scrambled order-wise, so some sounds were wrong, some didn’t exist, etc. Highest security and z-wave plus info for the device also got changed. I did the usual re-interview thing, which didn’t work. Then I did the rebuild routes thing, which also didn’t work. Excluded and re-included, nope.
Finally, I went thru the “factory reset” procedure as described on the Zooz website for the device. After re-including the chime following the “factory reset” it returned to its previous state, got included with S2 security and z-wave plus version 2. Zooz must also have a different understanding of what “factory reset” means than I do – all my sounds were back and in the order I’d left them before the firmware update, so no reconfiguring was necessary on the device.
End result is everything is back to normal, but I’m still not sure if I should have clicked that “update” button.
I had this same issue with the firmware update fail, I think it was just that the firmware image was corrupted during transmission and a checksum of the whole image failed on the device. I moved the device closer to the hub and it succeeded on the second try. Looking at the logs I noticed that mine had many comm issues during FW transmission.
I think the ZSE50 is still a little buggy firmware wise or maybe I just have a flakey device. It'll probably get better with updates.
I like that idea better than anything else I've heard or can think of. I know I did try three times myself to do the firmware update before it eventually succeeded later when I wasn't looking. (I hadn't looked in the logs, so I don't know how long it took or if there were further retries involved.)
In my case the chime was already located quite close to the z-wave controller, so proximity probably didn't have an impact for me.
What I can say is whatever it was, the error popup was not helpful in solving the problem. 1) Because it didn't mean anything to me and 2) It disappears whether or not the user acknowledges it and thus go unnoticed.
