Zooz ZST39 Causing HA to Lock UP

I have a new ZST39 USB stick and I am running the latest HA OS on a RPI 3… I added the ZWave JS integration and whenever I install the USB stick, HA completely locks up and becomes non-responsive. If I unplug it then HA starts working again. I have tried updating to the latest Zooz firmware available and it did not help. I know the USB stick is good because I downloaded Simplicity Studio and was able to add a device to the stick from this tool. Does anyone have any ideas what might be happening or how to fix this? I currently have 3 devices on my network with a couple more to add in the near future.

HAOS on a Raspberry Pi 3 with some apps installed is pushing the limits, which is why it’s no longer a suggested Raspberry PI platform. You may be running out of memory when Z-Wave JS is running. If you have other apps installed you could try stopping them all and see if Z-Wave JS works.

You can also see how much memory in use is being reported by going to Settings → System → Hardware

Thanks for the suggestion. I will try that tonight and see if that is the problem.

To test this, I turned off all “non-essential” integrations. Then I removed the Z-Wave integration rebooted and checked my memory usage. It was at .6GB out of 1GB. After installing and starting Z-Wave and trying to add my USB stick it started climbing and then just froze. The usage was still 0.7GB or so but rising rapidly. Since HA froze I have no idea what happened after this.

Sounds like out of memory.

I am looking into buying new hardware. Still on the fence about what to get but based on comments here is sure seems like I don’t have any choice.

For the first time today I noticed a warning in ZWave JS UI saying firmware versions older than 7.22.1 are problematic for the ZST39. But when I went to the Zooz site, they said they are aware of the warning but according to them you really only need to install the latest software if you are experiencing lockups:

"We realize that Z-Wave JS displays a warning about the 7.19 SDK version and Z-Wave sticks that use this version of the SDK. The 7.19 SDK released by Silicon Labs earlier this year can indeed sometimes produce controller lock-up issues, but only in edge cases. If you're not experiencing any issues with your network or controller, you can ignore the warning and there's no need to update the firmware. It's recommended that the Z-Wave stick is updated only if absolutely necessary to avoid service crashes. "

Might be worth a try…

I bought a used NUC and everything is now working fine with the same ZST39. It appears the running out of memory line of thinking may have had some merit.
