In my opinion, it is contradictory to talk about the importance of multiple backups and then force a single point of failure for all backups with mandatory encryption. I need my local backups to be unencrypted.

Possible WTHs for backup mechanism:

  1. Agreeing with the previous comments - encryption at least for local backups should be configrable
  2. WTH is there no possibility to create multiple automatic backup configurations (e.g. daily history backups + weekly share folder or addon backups)
  3. Show the size of the different restorable parts of the backups (after clicking on the backup itself in the data table) inside the “Select what to restore” section. This way, it is easy to recognize where much space is used (that might pollute the backup and stops the Cloud backup constraint)

“Encrypted backups by default”

This wording is confusing and currently incorrect. by default implies that this is a changeable setting which it isn’t.
I have no intention to upload my backups to a cloud provider and have an external system handling backups. That is now broken due to this change. In order to trigger any update at all it’s forcing me to run through the wizard.

EDIT: I figured a way to bypass this using an automation “action: hassio.backup_full”

Agreeing with other commenters here.

Release notes saying “Encrypted by Default” implies you can disable the encryption, this is obviously not the case and the release notes also state the optional password was replaced with a mandatory encryption key.

We NEED the option for unencrypted backups for local. I get making it mandatory for cloud providers (Nabu, BackBlaze, Google, etc). But please let local be unencrypted!

PLEASE free me from that forced encryption backup crap which is SO irrelevant on a private system.

And now multiple HACS integrations are broken too. I surely doesn’t hope this is a sign of what’s to come in HA for 2025 .

I get downvoted on reddit and got a nice “go away” response when raising this as an issue in the Discord. Mandatory encryption on local backups is dumb. Optional would be good.

Hello all,

After the update it seems that the UI has been reverted back to english regarless of the language setting. Am I the only one with the issue?

Also, I conccur with the need to have the ability to have unencrypted backups.

I’m all for improving backups, but I don’t see any mention of improving the horrendous restore process. Right now it’s inexplicably slow and with no progress indication of any kind.

Upgraded, seemed to work fine.
New backup GUI doesnt appear though…

For me only the new backup area is in English and the rest is still German.
