2025.1: Backing Up into 2025!

So, I’m not going to do that anymore. I’m not going to depend on something that I might need a few years from now, and when I need it, it might not be there.

KeePass. Open source, with a database file that is easily transferred around (I personally use Syncthing). Apps available for PC and for mobile devices.

So, I need something under my control

This is why I haven’t switched to BitWarden - too obfuscated, in my opinion…

“As @ChipMIK says, if you don’t like the new backup system, don’t use it.”

I didn’t say that in any way. I commented on a guy that doesnt use backups. Please stop referring to my comments if you can’t do it correctly. TY!

Backup or not, 2025 is the, by far, most far out change ever made and this done poorly. If all were as blindfolded as your ongoing comments then HA would be no where as great as it is today and the programmeres/team need feedback to acknowledge they went a bridge to far.

Then stop making noise here about something you doesnt use.

Fun fact: This topic is about backups! :joy:

Where were your backups in the past? Where are your backups today? Did you learn anything you want to tell us?

do you mean you are going to develop everything yourself?
of only relay on open source?
only local?

I’m not really sure what you mean, but in today’s society it’s absolutely impossible to not relay on others (companies)

  • Integrations are part of Core
  • Add-ons are containerised services

  • how often do you open your backup archives?
    Between 10-15 times a year

  • What do you open it up for?
Restoring purposes because some Update went wrong. I also had HW malfunction (SD Card roasted, PI board broken) and needed to setup a new system. In addition I had the situation where attached HW changed (Z-Wave Stick defect). Replacement HW was different than the original one and I need to create all my automations from scratch - so I opened old configs in parallel to create new ones.

  • How often do you need to restore your backups?
    Between 5-10 times a year

Running HA since +4 years now and I learned that Backups are essential. In addition sometimes releases are not stable enough and this >5 times killed my HA instance and I needed a restore.

Currently fully relying on Backup on google drive through add-on - which has been really a life saver for me.

Thanks- I like the distinction.

Shouldn’t “Stuff required to run SUPERVISOR” be “Buildroot, a minimal Linux for running Home Assistant”

Well, it’s Buildroot based, rather than being Buildroot. There’s also the basic bits required for it to update the OS, and other logic to ensure that the Supervisor is downloaded, installed, configured (if this is the first time it was installed), and started successfully.

I just upgraded to 2025.1.2. I use the addon “google drive backup” to backup HA with, which seems to be functioning just fine. Is there any reason why I even need to perform the setup of the new backup function(settings/system/backups), since I am not even using it? Should I do it just to get my encryption key, and store that away somewhere? I am leaning towards not doing any of the setup.

No. If you have an alternative you can skip. The key only matters. If you actually back something up.

Running core 2024.12.2. I tried installing “Auto backup” and failed. The message I got is “This version requires Home Assistant 2025.1.0 or newer”. If I try the older version, the message I get is “The version of Home Assistant is not compatible with this version”. No cookies for me  Is this OT?

No cookies for you you’ll have to upgrade before you can use that and yes please open aseparate topic if you need further assistance - this thread is specifically for 2025.1.x

you do not need to do anything,
If you want to be sure your backups are not ecrypted, you can always check the key symbol in the add-on

also you can download the backup and check if you can open the individual files. “configuration.yaml” or something,

the add-ons are still working as is, but I can imagine someone want’s to validate this manually

You could install an older version of Auto Backup. The requirement to run 2025.1.0 is for the newest version.

Perfect, I checked and my backups ARE NOT being encrypted. I never realized I could open up a tar backup file in Windows. I guess I have never had a need to do that, I have always just restored the full backup using HA. Thank you.

you need version 1.5.3
last version working with <= 2024.12.5
and it works well

Just tried to restore a backup made with 2025.1.2 - config and history selected. Seems to be stuck on “Restore backup” step i.e. never completes. No errors in logs

so that part hasn’t changed,
This is normal.
I would advice connecting to ssh and check with the “top” command if anything is still running, restoring a backup can take hours.
some kind of progress indicator would be helpful

[edit:] my comment wasn’t suppose to be bitchy but it could come over that way.

Will there be a 2025.2 with an option to turn off default encryption, or is there already a manual hack for this in 2025.1?
