Going to resurrect an old thread here because I’m thinking the same thing. I have Kasa switches throughout my house. But haven’t replaced the 4-ways yet because the 3-way Kasa is supposedly not usable in a 4+ way installation. However, I totally agree with your conclusion based on that wiring diagram.
Are you actually using the Kasa 3-way in this application? It sounds like yes, but wanted to confirm. Have you tried a Kasa 3-way dimmer in this application? If this works fine, why isn’t it an “approved” application? I feel like I’m missing something here considering the zillion or so threads trying to solve this problem in far more complex ways!
Yeah…I saw your post on one of the threads and watched this video. This is definitely an option. However, I would prefer to stay with the Kasa stuff for consistency and ease when it’s time to sell the house. So I’m really curious as to why the Kasa option won’t work?
I do have many non-dimmer switches in configuration with other non-smart 4 way switches. The one issue I do have which is that when I use a non-smart dimmer on the same circuit and it is set to a low brightness, it causes the Kasa to be flaky due to low voltage.
Kasa 3-way dimmers come as a set and I believe they may be designd to work together, which means that they may not work as a standard switch. I’ve never tried to test the outputs to see if this is the case though.
