You can use either or both at the same time, they do similar but different things.
All of this assumes that battery devices are available in HA and they include a battery reporting sensor.
If HA cannot see the device battery status, then it won’t be able to report anything to you.
If so, you can create a time based calendar/reminder to check the batteries at your chosen interval.
