Beginner pleb question regarding setup

There’s nothing special you need to do to connect with an iPad vs anything else.

I don’t understand. What part does the computer play in this?

Dont worry, all im getting here is snide unhelpful responses, I need it in dummy language which is what ive illuded to.

All I wanted to know is the URL to enter use to connect to the home assistant. I went to the documentation first off and it was all rasp pi which I dont have nor do I plan on getting.

I stated in the subject and in numerous posts simce, I am new to this and do not understand and hit a roadblock at the first step. I was told what to enter and it did not work. I then replied with a photo of where I had entered it and wasnt told why it was wrong.

I appreciate you’re trying to help and im trying to understand and feel stupid enough already having to ask the first step. I obviously need it spelled out and learn by trial and error not reading pages with no context or framework in my mind to tie it to, if i cant even get past the first step its back to youtube videos.

I’m confused here, man. I don’t understand what a pi has to do with anything. If you’ve already got home assistant up and running on something else, you’re good to go. The hard part of this particular equation is over. The URL you put in is literally the same that you used to configure home assistant.

Well, all we can do is assume you know what IP your home assistant is running on, so by looking at your screenshot, all we can do is say “it’s fine from here”. You show a pic of a URL. If your home assistant is running at 192.168.1.156 your URL is correct. What you’ve not told us is what your network layout is, or if you can even connect to the home assistant from a computer or not. You just keep saying you want to use an iPad as a dashboard.

I understand being new, but you also need to know how to ask good questions. You’ve been given the correct answer, if you’re having problems you need to troubleshoot that. Nobody here can literally hold your hand while you do this. I am not being snide in my comments, I’m thoroughly confused (remember you brought up the comment about “starting with a PC”?). I don’t know what that means or what that has to do with your iPad.

Help me understand your setup, because it doesn’t sound like you understand it.

Home Assistant runs as a web service on port 8123. It’s reachable via any browser on your network. It’s not any different than your router having a URL to manage it.

One thing it could possibly be is the wifi security setting in your router.

If the ip address of your shield is correct, and
If the shield is connected by wifi, and
If your router security settings do not allow communication between wifi clients…

Then you need to disable this setting in the router.
