Best practice for disaster recovery (HAOS)

Hey everyone,

I am running Home Assistant (OS) for quite some years and everything is working fine. I am just wondering how to prepare best in case of a hardware failure.

HAOS is running as a VM (on KVM) and gets two USB devices passed through:

  • Dresden Elektronik ZigBee gateway [ConBee II]
  • Aeotec Z-Wave USB Stick Z-stick 7

Besides a regular backup in HA what can I do more to be prepared for when a USB devices dies. And in that case what procedure should I do to get everything as fast as possible back online? Or is the only option reset every device and connect it to a new controller?

Welcome!

We have been working on a community guide to help people think about how to do disaster recovery planning: Disaster Recovery Planning.

I don’t have any experience with using / replacing USB devices like the zigBee or Z-wave so I can’t speak to that. But I would think about having a spare and testing how to recover before you need to do it - knowing how to recover before hand should reduce the recovery time.
