Best way to smart switch a big group of lights

Im in the - put in what works for you now - to be damned what’s on the horizon. Matter or whogigzitv.next (we’re horrible at naming this stuff) will always be around the corner. Put your effort in making what you have work and work well.

I prefer my IoT devices off my wifi network so while I use ESP devices I use them for specialty built items like monitors or a vent hood project im working on. Whether its Zigbee or Zwave for me would be reliability of the respective network. Where I am - that’s Zwave, the 2.4 spectrum in my area is NOISY.

I have both a well-built Zigbee and Zwave mesh - Im comfortable I have good coverage on both networks and could add up to a half dozen more devices with impunity. So everything being the same those locks would be zwave and I’d be fine with it. I’m more worried about the build quality of the locks than anything else if you want 8 years. (Your biggest challenge in that will be batteries - even in the best locks, BTW)

But back to topic - glad we could help.

It was just mend as a Joke  , And i am aware of variations in both Countries and "jurisdictions "

Here i can (Build-out) my House with upto 50% of the initial base-area, only Needing a “Spoken” “Go Ahead” … I am the Designer, Constructor And Responsible Controller( No Need for skits/prints/wire.diagram, Construcktion-Materials, Dimension etc ( I as Responsible just have to follow the different laws, local variation, and Required standards., and when it comes to the electrical wiring ( Drawing the cables) No need for any Certified Electrician.
The “Go Ahead” requires ME to make sure everything is done correctly , Meaning i.e having a Certified Electrician to connect and approve
Do i get an “Approved” ? … Yes if i done it properly
Btw. I have drawn alot wiring in my house/Garrage, designed- build my wood/electricity heating-system ( included Piping-dimension , for self circulation (i.e In Case of power loss) etc, even water-pipe and electricity-slings heated floors, also here the are rules and standards to follow, and requirements of Certified Approval, for the electricity, even here Certified Electrician is “required” for the connection at the Circuit-Box

PS: The quite Odd here is that, If i would build a small tiny plain cold garage, next to my house( not as part of the “Build-out current building”, as you said, lots of bureaucracy, handling cost, approval etc, before you even are “allowed” to stick the shovel in the ground … so weird

strange indeed… Our area requires a plumber but not an electrician… seems odd but I managed to do both by just telling my inspector I was advised by smarter people… I’ve done plenty of both though… To scare you all even more I’ve wired a 480v 25,000sqft warehouse from outdoor panel to finished… and never once thought about this LED power rush factor… I guess you only know what you know lol… Anyways… I’m starting to lean towards inovelli zigbee’s for my bigger rooms and zooz zwave’s for my smaller rooms… That would give me a good “base” for both protocols for whatever other fun headache’s I want to add in the future.

If you wait for things to change, you will never install anything because everything in this area is changing daily. There is no rule that you have to have the pinnacle of the technology. Just use what works now.

I have a mix of everything in my home. Zigbee, Z-wave, WiFi and 433 MHz. Even a couple of Bluetooth thermometers. No Matter in my near future and until this thread I had never heard of Thread.

Most of my switches are WiFi and about a third are Z-Wave. The most unreliable devices are ZigBee (Ikea) lights. The most simple are the WiFi switches- it’s either on or off. (WiFi switched are the cheapest). Most versatile are the Z-Wave switches which I use only where dimming would be desirable, like in the dining room and in the vicinity of the TV. I have never seen the affinity for color changing, but some people just have to have control over the color, so they require smart bulbs.

On to your original problem.

Until @NathanCu 's post, I knew there was some inrush current but since my largest circuit is ten can-lights, I never considered it.

Nathan provided a good explanation of inrush current, and that site also explains how to fix it with a simple Inrush Current Limiter in series with the circuit.

IF you decide on Z-Wave, my favorite source is thesmartesthouse.com. (Free shipping today).

Im also “holding on” with buying i.e Matter-Toys( until they are more “tested” and widely spread(lower price!), im sure both zigbee and zwave will stick around for the next 10 years

appreciate it guys… I’m in the buy now and hopefully have a free second to put it all together later mode. (although realistically I know I’ll probably never be less busy). Only ever done smartthings but HA looks very fun… and actually “thesmartesthouse” is the link I have open right now for the zooz switches

When I remodeled my last house, the city allowed me to do all of the plumbing and electrical myself with a simple construction permit and a final inspection when done. Which took all of 15-minutes. I was not allowed, however, to touch a gas line. I couldn’t even run the disconnected pipe through the exposed rafters. A licensed plumber had to do that.

Wise choice. I am still not clear who Matter’s target audience is, but I seriously doubt it will be the average Home Assistant user. I suspect it’s aimed at technology-phobic consumers and the price won’t be coming down soon, if at all.
