Brand new HassOS install trying to overtake my network

Hi,

sorry for the click bate title, but it’s basically that. let me explain.

i just installed “hassos_ova-5.11.vmdk” directly from github to an Oracle VM VirtualBox v.6.1.18 r142142 following the hook up (Migrate Hass.io from a Raspberry Pi to a Virtual Machine (Windows). Step by Step) tutorial
i also configure VmServiceTray, but it seems irrelevant because even if it’s not started by the service tray i get the same result.

VirtualBox has create a virtual (ethernet interface) that i can see in task manager (VirtualBox Host-Only Network). So i have Ethernet and VirtualBNox-Host-Only Network in task manager.

my router layout:
eth0 =unmanaged switch (which my PC, the VM server and my FreeNAS box+jail is connect to)
eth1=HdHomeRun (link 100Mbps)
eth2=nothing
eth3=nothing
eth4=Unifi AP-AC-LR
eth5=fibre from my ISP (pppoe)

What happen when i start the VM is the following:
as the boot sequence progress i see increase of CPU ~40%, disk activity ~50-100%, Ethernet climbing to 50Mpbs send& receive.
when it finished booting cpu stay ~40% disk goes back to 0% and network stay at 50Mbpsup and down.
now if i look at my EdgeRouter X sfp i can see that every port on the router is buzzy at ~100Mbps. in the webGUI of the ERX-SFP i see

wifi air wave get saturate by transmitting frame from my UAP-AC-LR which goes to nowhere (no client of my wifi is even talking from what i can see in my dashboard)

so… how to stop that behaviour plz

if it can help i will add the wireshark output. basically it send 130 000 packet in 28 sec of recording. All but 4 going to dest:224.0.0.251 [Multicast DNS (mDNS)] . 1/9 where MDNS protocol and 8/9 where IPV4 protocol according to wireshark see the picture below (on the top left being the IPV4 one and top right being the MDNS

This is likely the Discovery integration doing initial searches for components. When you started up there might have been a notification that HA has discovered the integrations and they can be setup. This is how they are discovered.

You would need to remove Default Config and add back those integrations you still want to use to make the discovery component inactive.

Edit: zeroconf and SSDP would also be broadcasting I think.

I believe DHCP discovery listens and doesn’t require any broadcast activity but I haven’t looked into how it works yet.

@silvrr and how i would remove de default config? i can do that in the WEB GUI or i need to go in the CLI of the VM?

If your hardware supports it, I highly recommend the vscode addon.

@silvrr, I have add the vscode addon and remove the line “default_config:” as shown in this picture, however removing it then rebooting the VM made it crash and i could not access the web page even after a couple of minute. at first it show ERR_CONNECTION_REFUSED then it refresh itself to become 404 so there was something on at this ip, but not responding to the http request. i had to delete the VM and install a fresh new one and then i made a firewall rule
with my ERX to drop all packet (source VM ip) (destination 224.0.0.251) to get my network back on control as a temporary fix

by the way my hardware is a Dell T3500 with a Xeon 3550 4c/8t 3.07GHz &12gig of ram running windows 10 latest update
i use VM virtualBox 6.1 to run the hassOS-5.12.vmdk

IndexError: index out of range

i don’t get how a brand new install could ask so much request and not be a widespread problem. I’d really like to love HA, but for now it’s a pain to use with this bug. Any other suggestion would be greatly appreciated.

You removed default config and unless you added frontend back, you would have no frontend/UI.

Read the docs.

got it, i didn’t notice that the UI was part of the default config. I’m not too familiar with the language (i didn’t learn coding)

to follow the removing of default_config: and adding back frontend, it is not working i still got flooded by mdns request as shown in my picture of wireshark.

I did some more testing:
i disactivate my temporary firewall rule that was blocking the VM to get to 224.0.0.251
i change my mdns repeater from
int.
switch0
switch0.10
switch0.20

to

int.
switch0.50
switch0.10
switch0.20

the VM is connected to switch0
after applying the change the flooding went away.
to see if it was a bug in the ERX i update the firmware from 1.10.11 to 2.0.9-hotfix.1, but when i switch back to repeat mdns switch0 it is flooding again.

i went to the webgui of HA and clicked on shutdown to see if it would help. even a couple minute after i got ERR_CONNECTION_REFUSED message from chrome i still had the flooding going on.

then i went to the cli of the VM and tried to see where to search.

i stopped the core, but still flooding. Then i tried did
multicast restart
the flooding went right away… but after 15-45sec it always flood back again… expected since it’s mostly the time to restart the multicast. sadly there is no command to stop it
the only mulsicast command where:

multicast info
multicast logs
multicast restart
multicast stats
multicast update

and yes it’s already update.

Other things i tried is to add zeroconf: to see if it would change anything (increasing or decreasing the noise… nothing. then i remove it and tried one example in the doc:

discovery:
  ignore:
    - sonos
    - samsung_printer
  enable:
    - homekit

it did not increase or decrease also.

I search in the doc about troubleshooting mdns, but it only talk about not beeing able to send/receive mdns, not about flooding the network

I Hope that the additional information ringed a bell to some person.

Same issue just started for me as well running on VirtualBox as of the 2022.4.7 update
