So if read on the forum that there are a lot of people that can get their cheap led controller to work with google home etc. I was wondering if i could just use my phone with google assistant to get this working. The only thing i could find about someone using their phone was this post: [Voice Controlled Cheap Non-Smart LED Strip with OK Google Command]. Only this guy uses it to send a URL to his google home which is not an option for me. Could anyone please tell me if this is possible to use just google assistant and if so how i could get it working?

Will work from your phone, so long as you authenticate using the same gmail account when connecting to the Google Assistant service on IFTTT.
