De-Amazonizing an Echo Dot 5th Generation for use as a Wyoming Satellite and Multiroom Speaker in Home Assistant

Hi everyone,

since the Amazon Echos, in whatever form, are a data protection disaster, but the hardware is quite appealing and the price is really okay, I’m looking for a solution.

Goal:
To root the firmware of one / more 5th generation Echo Dots, disconnect them from Amazon and integrate them into a local home assistant with local voice assistant and use them as voice recognition and multiroom speakers.

Various articles have rooted the older generations and integrated them in this way, but Amazon has probably also made regular changes to the hardware to prevent these hacks.

Hence the questions here:

  1. has anyone already successfully designed a debug adapter for the 9-pin debug connector and would want to make it available here?
  2. has anyone already made an attempt on the new version of the OS and perhaps already had success?

Best regards

Markus

Interested too…any update on this?

Wouldn’t it be a better approach to use the case of an Echo or Echo dot including speaker, microphone and LEDs but without the PCB? The circuit board could be replaced by a Wyoming satellite, which would be optimal for a HA satellite.

Hello,

I could well imagine that too, as the Echo Dots are currently in a price slump again during Black Week.

I think I’ve seen a round board based on ESP or Adurio before. Have you thought of one @Jpsy ?

Nope. I am currently waiting impatiently. During the last release party Paulus and Frenck gave hints that some surprise is on its way and will be released soon. I guess they will launch the first Nabu Casa audio satellite hardware before X-mas. :star_struck:

I wouldn’t expect it before Christmas '24 but yes Nabu is working on voice hardware.

“… over the past 6 months, we have built our own hardware! It will be the first voice assistant hardware built from the ground up to work with Home Assistant, fully open source (firmware and hardware), and it is going to be released very soon. It is truly the missing hardware piece to a more approachable voice experience in Home Assistant, and we cannot wait to see what you will build with it.”

December 19th! :star_struck:
