ESP Home Update - Side Menu Name

Not to mention that a home assistant feature request goes in the forum unless it is for the frontend, then it goes on GitHub. Madness.

Yeah, I’m not interested in hacking some yaml in a config somewhere just to do what should be a simple UI task for everyone. HA wants to be mainstream and that means you should be able to manage your instance without “file editor” for most tasks. I agree that this is the way things should work.

I tried home assistant 5-6 years ago and bailed out because everything you needed to do was yaml-this and yaml-that…I’m relatively comfortable with light coding and this was more than I would take on for simple home automation tasks.

A simple rename of an add-on in the sidebar should be simpler than this entire thread!!

On the other hand you have typed your complaints here all by yourself.

@tom_l typed the solution out for you. You only have to copy and paste.

Which is easier? Depends how much you like complaining, and how much you like saying “Gee thanks for that”.

Has meanwhile somebody opened an issue or a feature request about renaming that menu entry? I would like to leave a  there, too.

 see post 19

That does not count, as it was closed as completed without comment. :joy:

No wonder it was closed, since it wasn’t filled properly… only title is there, the rest is missing (describe the problem…). I bet it was closed for that reason.

Honestly, I always found having the sidebar open constantly cut into the maximum width of my dashboard, so I went into my user settings menu and hid it. It’s still available when I do want it, but it’s not in the way.

Guys, let’s go a step back…
How about a change in the UI that will give us the ability to rename any entry of the sidebar?

From the profile → edit sidebar to add a small pencil button on each entry with which you can change the display name for that specific entry…

I think it’s possible isn’t it?

Sure it’s possible but the devs have repeatedly indicated that they are not interested in making everything configurable. This would seem like one of those things but I do not know for sure.

There’s a work-around in my post above to make your own sidebar menu items and call them whatever you want.

Hi Tom,

i wasn’t aware of this statement but if i think how popular are integrations such as card mod which give you the exact ability to customize parts of the dashboard, or even entirely custom dashboards (like fusion), i assume that this is what the users would want.

Card Mod is not for everyone but such small implementations on the UI which are easy to use (like i suggested above) would be most welcomed in my opinion.

To further support my opinion, the dashboard for many users, is like a picture hanged on the wall (most probably on a tablet). Functionality of the dashboard is sure a big part but esthetics (customization options) is equally big.

Personally, i have the sidebar hidden so i didn’t even notice the change. Usually i only open it once in a while to access the developer tools and settings but not frequently. Regardless i will try your workaround!

Thank you!

Just an info: I don’t know exactly when, but it seems that name was shortened to “ESPHome compiler”, so there’s no need for above extra code anymore. Can anyone confirm that? If that’s so, then thank you devs! That was quick!

I noticed when i ran my test HA today and updated to latest esphome version and latest HA (2024.12) becasuse 2024.12 messed up slovenian translation, which is now mixed with swedish and i wanted to check if i missed something.
