Espressif Box devices + Willow Multilingual Voice STT & TTS Home Assistant Add-on How To Configure

Bo, i did not fiure it out - yet.
By the way, this problem is not in anyway related to the Norwegian language. It will be the same with any non-english language.

Do you mean Upgrade the Box3 to the latest Willow release?

Yes. Do we just reflash it?

yes

Bought two Box-3’s and have one running Willow and one using HA directly (Wyoming). Neither are really usable though.

Willow is a bit funny in that half the time after it wakes up and plays the chime it immediately returns with ā€œI heard DINGā€. Well, I guess that’s true.

If anyone in the UK is still looking for a Box-3 these people seem to have plenty:

I think it’s a new startup, but it is legit - I’ve bought several.

It’s a good idea to switch off the ā€œwake confirmation toneā€ in the web UI.

Hello! Is there a possibility to assign certain clients to certain rooms in HA? Atm I have to specify the room I’m in to have it work. Thx!

Just a note to say that the public WIS was no longer available today.

Not clear whether or not this is a temporary problem. The Developer has been MIA for some time.

Another note to confirm that the Willow Inference Server has closed down.

You can still build your own, though. Everything you need is on Github.

Edit: Mine has spoken its first words: ā€œIt’s ten past threeā€¦ā€ Aw.

Pro tip to anyone wanting to try this: use Ubuntu 22.04 - some of the scripts don’t work with later versions.

Just heard more about the closure of the Willow Inference Server. Apparently it’s creator, Kristian Kielhofner, has died unexpectedly. Very sad news.

This was a fantastic project.
Has anyone been able to find a working alternativ (a free cloud-based STT server)?

No. My own local server is still working, though.

One of the issues with it, which is becoming increasingly evident as voice develops in HA, is that Willow isn’t really integrated with Home Assistant at all. The add-on exploits Assist to issue commands, but none of the the Box-3 devices exist in HA, so you can’t (for example) assign them to areas.

Doesn’t bother me at the moment, but…

The main issue is that you need a ton of HW to run it locally.

Yes the whole project probably cost Ā£500 plus, even on Ebay. Still, I’ve got a great gaming machine if I want one.

Hey @jackjourneyman I’ve been working on a patch for WAS and a quick custom integration if you wanted to experiment with willow having an awareness of which area it’s in (GitHub - ciaranj/willow-application-server at PRESENT_DEVICE_ID and GitHub - ciaranj/ha_willow_integration: Barebones willow custom integration for HomeAssistant ?) It’s a bit janky / requires tchnical knowledge to install it currently as I’m just experimenting, but it provides both ā€˜location context’ to the HA intent pipeline as well as a state you can hang automations (Such as locally muting speakers) off.

Thanks for the pointer. Willow seems to be coming back to life! :+1:
