So it turns out the usb to ttl adapter I had actually supplies 3.3v too, the line wasn’t connected.
Soldered the feed, and I’m able to flash the sonoff!
Haven’t tested on 240v yet, but should be fine.
For my own curiosity, why wouldn’t my rig work with a different power supply, that’s all I’ve changed.
Been forever since I DIY’d…
Is it a different ground reference to blame?
Could it be my 2xAA’s not quite providing enough power?
Hi @tom_l and @finity if you’re still about it’d be great to see if you have ideas on the below…
I bought a few Sonoff POW R2 (V2.0) from here: ‘https://www.oikotec.com.au/products’. The build quality is really good. I’m a bit nervous about putting stuff into my walls…
I can flash and configure the Sonoff Basic R2’s no problem (previous problem).
However when I follow the same process with the Pow R2’s, I can’t see the device attached to my COM3.
I hold down the button on the device, no lights, good start, then not able to detect anything…
Boot the Pow R2 without pushing the button - blue blinking LED’s (per normal boot sequence I assume)…
I configured another Sonoff R2 afterwards, just to make sure my USB adapter still works - no problem.
I’ll keep looking around, hoping you might be familiar with this behaviour… ?
Found this… ‘https://github.com/arendst/Sonoff-Tasmota/issues/4587’
Here’s a snap of the top of the board:
I haven’t flashed a POW R2 for quite some time. I can’t really remember any problems though.
I assume you read this on the Tasmota web page:
To enter flash mode , press down on the button while powering the device.
Note - After the module type is changed to “Sonoff Pow R2”, the serial port is no longer available for entering configuration commands because the serial port is used to communicate to the power measurement chip. Make sure you have set up your network connection before doing this.
yes, I think at least.
That’s the same process I use for the other R2’s (holding the button down when it boots).
I’m not sure what to make of the comment:
‘Note - After the module type is changed to “Sonoff Pow R2”, the serial port is no longer available for entering configuration commands because the serial port is used to communicate to the power measurement chip. Make sure you have set up your network connection before doing this.’.
How do I set up the network before doing this?’
Should I try any connect directly to the device via its web interface, then try again?
Seems to be what needs to happen…
Flash Tasmota.
Reboot.
Connect to the device in AP mode (192.168.4.1) .
Set the wifi network using the web interface. Restart.
Make sure you can connect to the device web interface via your wifi network. Then set the device type.
Thank you.
I’ve done a few Sonoff basics in Esphome now. They’ve worked a treat up until this new device which is a Sonoff Pow R2 V2.0.
This new device can’t be seen by my computer when connected to the usb port. It’s getting power no problem, just isn’t recognised as being connected.
It’s a real pest.
heya,
I double checked the Tx and Rx pins - no problem there.
I reloaded the serial drivers for the usb ttl adapter - no problem there.
Coincidentally my Amazon delivery arrived today (the hiletgo USB interface @finity recommended in this thread).
Darn thing worked first go!
I’e yet to connect to 240V to see it’s working okay (it’s my first build of this type of sonoff). But I think it’ll all be good.
Thanks for the ongoing assistance @tom_l - much appreciated.
