HASSIO and Hue

I’m trying to configure Hassio to discover some Philips Hue bulbs, but without any luck.

Do I need to purchase and install a Hue Bridge first? I was under the impression Home Assistant would function in place of the Hue Bridge.

Hue bulbs require a bridge

You can control the bridge with basic http requests, but the bridge is what talks to the bulbs.

I believe you need the Hub for Hue. It’s the tradfi you don’t require a Hub for…?

Thanks. I assumed because HA could be configured to see the bulbs in discovery, it could also control them. I can’t even get HA to find the bulbs in discovery. Back to the drawing board.

Discovery will find the hub, it won’t find the bulbs.

Are you perhaps confusing it with emulated_hue which is often discussed? This makes non hue devices controlled by HA appear like they are so that the likes of Alexa and the Harmony Hub can operate them as if they were the real thing.

Thanks, Bobby_Nobble. I guess I was thinking the HA would serve in place of a Hue Hub.

I’ll pick-up a Hue Hub and give it a go. Once I have it in place, I think HA will serve as expected.

Think it’s only as far as you can use a USB zigbee device connected to the Pi instead of the Ikea gateway.

We just about at the place now where hue and ikea bulbs work with each others hubs.
For ikea bulbs with hue hub you need the latest firmware (which unfortunately needs the ikea hub to update the bulbs… hopefully soon ikea stores will be carrying bulbs with the new firmware factory installed)

For hue bulbs with ikea hub I cant find the link, but I saw it a few days back.

Either way, you need some form of zigbee transceiver. Hue hub, Tradfri gateway or perhaps one of the dresden USB ones?

Definitely keen to hear when the Ikea bulbs with Hue Hub compatible firmware are out :+1:

LOL, maybe you can update the firmware in the Ikea store?

Time to rock out my travel router
