“What? Your not getting the energy performance we reported? Ohhh, that’s because this car is autonomous and we based our performance measurements with the car empty while conducting the performance tests. If you want to get those good numbers, just don’t be in your car at the same time. Problem solved!”

Mine is a hybrid, not an EV, but I assumed the same thing when I got my car, and boy was I wrong. Turns out, there’s 3 options available:
- Can of inflato-goo and a 12v pump. There’s a polystyrene (or similar) insert with loads of unused space but, guess what - there’s no tyre shaped cutout. This, btw, is the default.
- Donut tyre, which you can purchase as a separate “upgrade”. The bad news is that you have to buy another different polystyrene insert. The worse news is that this insert comes in 3 separately-purchasable parts. Oh joy - that’s 4 different parts to order, excluding anything else you might need to actually replace the tyre!
- Same as above, but with a full size tyre option. Cherry on the cake is that the thickness of the full sized wheel now means that your old boot liner no longer fits properly. Guess what - you need to order a replacement boot liner too!
Long story short - check and double check before buying, and bargain with the dealer to see if they can upgrade you at a discount. Those tyre kits are bloody expensive!
Don’t give them ideas…
This is becoming more normal.
