PCIe Generation Compatibility: SSDs utilizing PCIe Gen 3.0 tend to work reliably with Home Assistant Yellow. In contrast, some PCIe Gen 4.0 SSDs, such as the WD Black SN770 and Kingston NV2, have been reported as non-functional.
SATA vs. NVMe: SSDs designed for SATA, like the Transcend 240GB M.2 SSD 820S, are incompatible, as Home Assistant Yellow supports only NVMe SSDs.
Specific Models: Certain models, including the Samsung 980 Pro 1TB and Verbatim Vi3000 256GB, do not function correctly, despite meeting general specifications.
I tried the Samsung model (MZ-V7S1T0B/AM) and my HA Yellow didn’t recognize it. I’ll try another one and see if I just ended up with a bad one the first go-around
Good: just bought ADATA Legend 710 PCIe Gen3 X4 M.2 2280 SSD 1TB / 2N4229AAQKAX and it just works. Just installed it, let’s see if it will run smoothly.
Bad: Western Digital 1TB Blue SN580, M.2 2280 PCIe Gen 4.0 (WDBWMY0010BBL)
This might’ve been a different model number of WD 1TB Blue SN580 that worked for bwaller (Gen 4.0 vs. Gen 3.0), or perhaps there’s another issue. As of yet, no SSD has been recognized by this machine.
Hi there, had you succeeded with MZ-V7S1T0B/AM? I tried 2 different pieces of this model, but none worked for me. Seems that 1TB is not supported. Interestingly, some other people reports that it works. I contacted support, but they are not responding.
Same here! Just starting with HA and opted for HA Yellow with a PI CM5. I’m about to buy the Samsung 990 PRO 1TB M.2 NVMe SSD. Is it compatible or should I look for another one?
Worked: Samsung PM9A1 512GB, M.2 2280 Nvme SSD, Model MZ-VL25120, Part # MZVL2512HCJQ-00BH1
Using: Home assistant yellow hardware version 1.3 with CM5
Running Home Assistant version Core 2025.4.3
Supervisor 2025.04.0
Operating System 15.2
Frontend 20250411.0
Booted the system and then moved using the GUI using the Home Assistant process here. Actual move took about 2 minutes since I don’t have much data to move. eMMC no longer available in the GUI but the system still shows it via the “All hardware dialogue" under “mmcblk”. SSD shows under “nvme”.
Hardest parts were: Knowing to use a hex metric 1.5mm (they said 1mm and I was searching everywhere for one… but then I just removed it with my fingers and later learned that 1.5mm works ok). Later use a star PH1 bit for the bottom. The translucent bottom part of the case on the bottom, the board just sits on it, it’s not attached.
The Home Assistant Yellow is not compatible with the Pi Compute Module 5 (CM5).
It was designed specifically for the Compute Module 4 (CM4) The CM5 has different power, I/O, and physical layout specifications and will not work in Yellow’s carrier board
