How to read Enbridge Natural Gas Meter

For electricity monitoring I would definitely recommend installing your own monitoring system. I have the Iotawatt which works pretty well, but if I was going to buy another I would go with the Emporia Vue and flash it with ESPhome. That way you can get live data on your energy use and also monitor directly any major loads.

I’m currently using Emporia Vue and love it, but haven’t flashed it to ESPHome yet. Still using the cloud.

With regards to the green button, that would not be instant date, it’s more for analyzing the usage at the end of the month from what I understand .

Now if they provide an API with instant data access that’s another story.

i just installed emporia vue flashed with esphome, installation was straight forward and everything went fine, really loving the monitoring it’s great to know exactly how much in and out from grid…
don’t think they can provide instant data access via green button right? don’t they still have to read the meter by driving by? and if it’s enbridge they literally manually read the meter with their eyes lol

At least in Ottawa, the data is sent by radio for electricity and water. So the green button data is relatively up to date. Really hoping for a solution to consume the green button data.
As for Enbridge, they have been asking client to read their own meter and report the results online

I solved this issue by converting every gas appliance in my home to electricity and cancelling my natural gas service. Maybe a little extreme but at least now I can actually track my energy use.

The following seems to work pretty well with my Enbridge gas meter and the cost to implement the sensor is not too expensive. Works well on water meter in Toronto as well (Neptune N10).

Were you able to get the green button xml data into HA?

Hi. I wanted to cross post on here to share what I learned about the Green Button and in case anyone had luck integrating it into Home Assistant for Alectra Utilities that provides electricity and water.

Or maybe these two posts can be merged since we’re after the same data?

@teknowiz

Have you mounted the QMCL on your Enbridge gas meter. Did the meter reader person give you trouble. If possible can you upload a picture

Thanks

Replying with a photo of my install using that same integration. No concerns flagged from the utility for me. At least not yet.
The sensor is in the waterproof box, and the two round things on the back are just used to hold the box against the meter.

Thank you very much. Genius – putting it behind the meter rather than the front. I have the same meter as shown on the Github repo. I am guessing whether I mount on the front or the back wouldn’t make a difference. Natural Gas is the last thing left to monitor.

See below, no complaints from meter reader:

Thanks for the picture. My meter is the same as yours do you think if I mount it on the rear of the meter in the same spot will I get the same accuracy?

Lot of factors on that such as sensor sensitivity and external interference. I recall trying it in the back but ran into some issues but that may have been due to initially using thermostat wire instead of Ethernet. Only way to know is try it that way and if not working move to front.

This is AWESOME!

Where does the wire go to on the interior of the house?

Thanks for all your help, not as elegant as the others – I made many mistakes along the way however it is working

Hello All,

Good news — I was able to capture the meter reader on camera, and she did not interfere with the sensor at all. She simply read the meter and moved on.

Overall, the sensor works consistently and the readings are accurate. However, I’ve noticed that after a few days of use it occasionally stops reading. When this happens, I need to unplug it and sometimes re-calibrate it. This could be due to several factors, but I wanted to check whether anyone else has experienced a similar issue.

For comparison, I also have the water meter sensor, and that one has been working for months without needing any re-calibration.
