IKEA just announced 21 new affordable Matter-over-Thread smart home devices (which may also support Zigbee too)

Do you have to spam this stuff in every single forum post where Matter is even mentioned? We get it, you’re not a fan.

Apparently patience is needed

Have any IKEA devices been hacked so we can install a custom firmware?
I am not a big fan of closed, proprietary systems. I prefer systems with open source firmware.

The devices being discussed in this post are Matter-over-Thread. How much more open are you looking for?

they can be used with any thread/matter system, and the zigbee versions are possibly even more open

Matter-over-Thread is essentially just the language/protocol. It has nothing to do with being able to adjust the features of the device the way a custom firmware can.

If you look at tasmota or at pvvx firmware, you will see that suddenly lots of features that the hardware supports become available “simply” by switching to a better, actively maintained open source firmware.

I like to buy good hardware and then replace the (usually restricted) firmware. That way I get the most out of the sensors/devices.

No, they have not been hacked yet. They’ve been commercially available for a month or so, and even then only regionally. They work great (including offline) in my personal experience, but if you want entirely open source firmware then you should probably look elsewhere.

I was not referring only to the new ones. IKEA has had sensors for a while now. If the old ones were then the chances would be high for the new ones.

Most matter devices are locked down with the help of secure boot and flash encryption. Likely 0% ownable :person_shrugging:

So you will stay far away from matter for sure :bulb:

I’m very happy with the zigbee2mqtt integration and home assistant as it is easy to connect remote location without having a vpn but just a cloud available mqtt broker.
And i’m also looking forward to the support for 800 MHz frequency for better coverage and lower power consumption.
Do you know if a Thread2mqtt project is in the work?

@orange-assistant — we understand your perspective, but please avoid dominating the thread with repeated or off-topic comments.
Personally I find some of those come across as unnecessarily hostile toward other community members.

Your skepticism about Thread and Ikea has been clearly stated, so there’s no need to continue reiterating it. Please allow space for other viewpoints and let the discussion stay focused on the topic without ongoing criticism.

@orange-assistant I have both ADHD and OCD so often get fixated on narratives too, we already gor your point, but at this time you are just spamming us all with repeatibg posts which is not constructive in the same discussion, so enough is is enough. Please give this discussion a break now or we have to report your post to the forum moderators as inapproriate.

If you absolutly can not stop yourself then please start a new dedicated thread that can be focused on discusing why Matter devices should be avoided today. That way you so not spam the people who follow this thread (no pun intended).

It was on display in the bottom of a locked filing cabinet stuck in a disused lavatory with a sign on the door saying ‘Beware of the Leopard.’

I am still waiting to see one, just one compelling reason to adopt Matter.

I get your joke, but in no way is the matter qr/code not obvious. You have to take the cover off to access the battery, the qr is Right. There.

I think it is a smart place for it, I would not want the QR visible on the face of the device, nor would I want it on the detachable mount where it can be lost or accidentally swapped with another device.

When sharing, the Matter Controller (in this case HA) should be generating a “sharing” code which is different from the QR/Numeric code used to first commission a device, and you use this sharing code to commission the device onto another Matter Fabric (in this case Google Home)

Looks like they did exactly that with the Temp/humidity sensor.

I stole it from Reddit

I checked my temp/humidity sensor now, the QR and the code is on the detachable back, on the device itself it’s only the QR.

I mean, if you don’t wanna use it then don’t. Personally, I use it because there’s a pretty wide variety of reasonably priced, locally controllable devices out there that use the standard that I can get at local brick-and-mortar stores (like these Ikea devices, which were a great value and which I’ve been very happy with so far). Since I already have Apple TV devices in my home that act as Thread border routers I can use Matter-over-Thread devices without having to buy any dongles or proprietary hubs, which is a big plus. And since it natively supports cross-platform use, I get the higher spouse approval factor by adding them to Google Home so that my wife can use them with voice commands (she isn’t interested in installing or using Home Assistant).

But hey, maybe none of that is relevant or useful to you. If your household exclusively uses Home Assistant, you already have all the devices you need, or you’re already all-in on a Zigbee or Z-Wave network, then yeah–you’re probably not gonna gain anything by adopting Matter. But nobody is asking you to!

I’m normally more of a lurker than a poster, but I’m just getting tired of seeing literally every thread about Matter being derailed like this. Home Assistant is a platform with a huge install base and an insane variety of supported integrations and devices. Maybe Matter or Thread isn’t your cup of tea, but they’re two of the most popular integrations out there–bigger than ZHA, bigger than Z-Wave, and bigger than HomeKit. I, personally, can’t understand why anybody would want to connect their toothbrush to Home Assistant, but I’m not derailing threads about the Oral-B integration (which is a thing!).

And crucially, remember that for most people, Home Assistant isn’t their first smart home platform. A ton of people start out with buying some smart device to address a specific need, like adjusting their thermostat from their phone or voice controlling their lights. For those people, Matter makes a ton of sense–why buy something that’s locked to a single platform or something that requires a separate hub when you can get something that works seamlessly with devices you already have? It’s a huge leap forwards compared to the kind of devices users like that would have used before. And when those kinds of users find their way to Home Assistant, they’re going to want to integrate the devices they already have. For those users, it’s going to make more sense for them to keep buying Matter and Thread devices rather than buying into a whole different ecosystem, even if the same isn’t true for you. So can we please move past this and stop dragging these conversations down?
