LG spying on its customers

Yet if there is some concern about the device considered legit by the mfgr, they can shut the device off and make it inoperable.
I have 1 matter device and it’s so secure I can’t get the networking to work at all, and I’m no slouch running 2 zigbee, 1zwave, wifi, ble, and rf433 in this house alone, similar in another house. If you like matter, you can keep it.

I was already suspicious enough of Matter based on it’s corporate backers, but this. They really don’t care do they. It’s so blatant nowadays.

Nobody should touch this crap because you will get burned.

Yes, this is a concern. And yes, it’s so blatant these days. As if customers just don’t care. As long as we keep buying this stuff, they’ll keep consolidating their control over it.

Even when they try to disguise it, they’re pretty transparent. Like claiming they’re somehow doing it for “security.” Yeah. Like I can’t decide for myself which hardware I trust to install into my system. I need Big (corporate) Brother to decide for me.

“keep buying this stuff” I would suggest they want you paying for , not buying.

In the TV business nothing can beat Google, every cheap panel out there , and there are thousands small brands , they don’t have the power or the wish to harvest data, so they hand it over to the giant.

A Google tv in my network generates most of the DNS blocked entries (adguard). They update the firmware not with features, but with new penetration tools for our net. They neeeeeed to call home!

Anyone noticed that TVs getting cheaper when everything else is getting more expensive by the day?
I can afford a big ass tv but I cannot afford a decent mini PC anymore, wtf

I think they do. Very much - but strictly not about the consumers but to secure revenues in the future instead. :money_bag:

So marketing claims from matter could be:

  • Secure! We have full control over your device - you don’t because we value full control..
  • Interoperability! Sharing is carring so we allow even “local” matter devices to share data with our cartel friends/cloud :hugs: :cloud:

Reading thru the forums it seems that some matter products need to be paired/commissed with some (e.g. Amazon) cloud matter server just to be “shared” afterwards to also work with HA… :person_facepalming:

They (most!) just don’t - read the forums

…and even HA/OHF pushing anti ownership tech forward by taking part in the club

Alliance Member Open Home Foundation’s Paulus Schoutsen, President, discusses how Matter helps create a smart home where users have greater control, flexibility and long-term confidence in the devices they choose.

What could possibly go wrong? :see_no_evil_monkey:

This is my biggest fear. It wouldn’t be the first time. Start an organization with the intention of doing some good. The organization grows and you have to start hiring MBAs and other “experts” in running a business. They have the same corporate mindset as all the other big companies: Take control away from those pesky customers, feed them what we want to feed them, and harvest the money needed to keep the organization expanding. In that environment, it would seem irresponsible not to take advantage of the customers (users) and squeeze every drop of value out of them.

It’s Conway’s law in another form: the system shapes things in its own image.

This is a constant pressure from inside and outside. It can be resisted but that requires awareness of the issue, constant vigilance and whatever is needed to keep true and not be assimilated into the capitalist Borg.
