Meross MSS315 plug - no entities for power measurement

Bummer !

Amazon alerted me to these an hour ago, so needing a smart outlet that reports energy usage - also Matter compatible, I jumped in!

I don’t have any matter devices so I thought it would be fun - then saw this thread,

oh dear!!

With Matter you can currently only switch the socket, the power consumption is not yet integrated into the Matter standard.

Maybe next year!

Good morning,
I was just thinking of ordering Meross Matter sockets (on sale) and I see this post… As of 02/29/2024 it still doesn’t work? In fact, I have just set up an HA because I have a lot of wifi equipment from different brands and I wanted to centralize and replace it as I go along because my wifi is completely saturated with ± 35 IP addresses. With Matter we also use router IPs or are the IPs distributed by HA? I thank you in advance.

With Matter over WiFi your Matter device is just like any other WiFi Device in your Network, your Router hands out IPv4 addresses via DHCP and the device will generate an IPv6 from the Prefix it gets through RA.
Unfortunately you also can’t really isolate your WiFi Matter Devices in a dedicated IoT Network/WiFi.

How is your Network with 35 IP Addresses saturated? Limitation by your ISP provided Modem/Router?
You can look into Zigbee or Z-Wave Smart Plugs with Power Measurement. Nice, offline, doesn’t clog up your Network and reliable.

What device can this be? A 20 year old ISP router with 4MB ram?

Just get yourseld a 10 year old openwrt capable device with 8 or 16MB of ram and 100+ devices shouldn’t be any problem!

I’m using Merros LAN and it was successfully connected but still 0s on energy consumption in home assistant. I can turn on and off but that is it.

Since matter 1.3 the energy monitor is supported. However I couldn’t find any information if Meross has updated this plug or will update it soon. Which other plugs do you use which work for energy monitoring with home assistant?

Not from Meross but Gosund sp111 flashed with tasmota or shelly plug s work great for me. Gosund plugs are a lot cheaper than the ones from Shelly and I see no reliability differences.

Just bought a 4-pack MSS315 (and it was listed as having Energy Monitoring) but indeed. The documents show only with the Meross app. I thought let’s give the new Matter a go but no thanks. Really sad that this is not clear on the product page.

Not really interested in running another addon just for this. Guess I will just go and get some zwave plugs instead.

Yes - I had the same negative experience having purchased 2 on prime day … I am in a conversation with meross support to try and find when they will release new firmware that enables the matter 1.3 capabilities (assuming the plugs hardware can deal with it). I installed the hacs meross IP addon to get the data but its not really what I wanted. I was trying to get around the problem I have with my router where I have run out of IP reservation table space, Matter would make that transparent.

I added a -ve review of the product on amazon as the material on there uses weasel word to try and mislead readers.

Never thought my first post was going to be an (almost) problem-solving one
I just emailed them to ask and they will!

Dear Customer,
Thank you for contacting Meross.
Sorry, currently you can read the energy measurement via Meross app only, it’s not possible to read those data via the 3-rd party Matter platform.
But recently Matter released a new version that allows users to read the energy data, we will update the device firmware to support it asap, at the same time, the 3-rd party Matter platforms need to update their apps to support the new matter protocol as well, otherwise, it’s still not possible to read the energy data.
Have a nice day!
Best regards,
Alicia

The Matter Update in question is Matter 1.2 which was released in October 2023.
The “Third Party Matter Platforms”, in this case Home Assistant, should support Matter 1.3 by now.
AFAIK Meross is not “forced” to update their devices to 1.2 or even 1.3 and why would they if that makes you delete their App because you don’t need it anymore?
This and the fact that matter only really works in a flat network makes me stay with “flashable” WiFi Plugs/Bulbs.

Anyone finding this, yes, you can get power measurement sensors in HA for the MSS315 Smart Plug Mini. You just need Meross LAN addon from HACS installed, as well as Matter Server from the HA add on store.

I had no issues, setting up once my phone was on the 2.4Ghz Wifi, the first plug I added was a bit painful where I had to try a few times, but I’ve since added 4 more MSS315’s and they connected very quickly and first try. I however do think the firmware version is important, so if you’ve having connecting issues, add to the Meross app first and update the firmware, then try again.

As soon as I turned on the MSS315 plugs I get a pop up on my phone, it automatically assumes I want to use Google Home, I select other, then select Home Assistant, it then adds the device to the Matter Server in HA. I also found pairing happens more reliably if you have your phone as close as possible. It’s now possible to rename the device in the Matter addon, as others say correctly, you will only get an on/off switch within Matter.

I then open the Meross app on my phone, and it will have a new device available to add. You need to do this because the Meross LAN addon works by logging in with your Meross credentials, and then pulling the extra sensors available that way. I also suggest pairing one by one, and renaming them in Matter, Meross LAN and the Meross phone app, then you know exactly which is which.

Below is an image of one my MSS315 smart plug mini’s with power management, so you can see all the sensors you should expect. DND = the green LED.

I mainly got a 2 pack so I could battery manage my Amazon Fire HD 10 Plus that sits on an Anker Qi Charger stand, which I use as my HA kiosk panel, so I use a battery management blueprint automation where the plug turns on when the battery drops to 22% (I found sometimes there’s a sensor polling delay, and the actually battery reading would be 18% when HA was saying 20%, so I’ve just accounted for the odd delay,) and the plug turns off at 78%, again to compensate any delay so it doesn’t go above 80%. I used the 2nd plug to monitor power usage on my pfSense router, Promox Dell mini PC, POE switch and AP, what I have called my Core Network (that’s what you see in the image), I found it useful so I decided to buy some more off ebay to power monitor some other devices.
