So cool - I absolutely appreciate the audio-books!
I have quite some of them in my file-system.
And that brings me straight to the important question, which I could not find any answer / clue in the Github or website:
How to sort / arrange the folders?
I have some that are easily recognized:
Audiobook-folder/Book1234/
Tack 01
Track02
…
Other ones are like this:
Audiobook-folder/Book1234/
Disk1
Track01
Track02
…
Disk2
Track01
Track02
…
This makes my book-library look like this: (Red = CD-Folders, Green - Correctly recognized)
I have just installed Music Assistant and wanted to incorporate my playlists from my “Musicolet” app I use on my Sammy phone to listen to Music in car. However I not sure if Music assistant supports playlist backup and restore of any kind.
I was pretty skeptical about compatibility but thought I check.
Basically dont use any streaming services and have my mp3 collection on the phone and my Win11 Machine. The Win11 Machine also has VMware player with HA and Music Assistant on it. Predominantly wanted to mirror what I listen to in the car with my phone as I keep it updated. I would need to update the links as the folders wont be right phone vs Win11 but was hopeful.
I don’t know what is happening but every once in a while Spotify deauthenticates and I have to reauth. It doesn’t matter if I use a client ID or not, it just won’t stick for more than a day. It may be related to system restarts, I’ll try to figure that out soon.
It’s also a pain because the Spotify login flow eventually leads me to the internal streaming URL of the MA instance, instead of the public Web URL I have configured with a proxy. Why provide option to configure a nice music.domain with a proxy, if the app is just gonna ignore it?
What about you use something like RSYNC or any other sync-app to syncronize the files. Some years ago I did this via QSYNC with my QNAP-Nas and synced my local MP3 to my mobile.
(Don’t look up QSYNC if you don’t have the NAS, would not work)
Maybe you could use tasker?
I’m also using MA for not very long, but I’m sure your request is far beyond its capabilities.
Music assistant supports the standard m3u format playlists. You can create these pretty easily using a text editor, or alot of media players and mp3 taggers can do it to, like mp3tag or winamp.
Just make sure the path to your media files is relative to folder you allocated in music assistant for your media files.
So for example, if you have files in an SMB share like this:-
/Users/Myname/Music/
And the full path to a given (say) mp3 file is:-
/Users/Myname/Music/somefolder/somesong.mp3
Then the playlists path should be:
/somefolder/somesong.mp3
Alternatively you can make the playlist entirely inside Music Assistant, just select playlists and use the button top right to create a new one.
Note that prior to v2.4 that just got released, there used to be an option to create the playlist remotely, but this seems to be gone. This doesn’t stop you making the playlist outside of MA as with the instructions above tho.
(If you do make the playlist outside of MA, make sure its in a folder or subfolder of your main share so MA can see it. You might also need to refresh your playlists and reload them using the UI for it to pick them up.)
Just started using Music Assistant and have a couple of quick questions
about podcasts - I use Spotify with Music Assistant - is there any way with this latest release that I can stream my Spotify held podcasts?
is there any way to tailor what is shown on the Home screen - I know that I can alter the menu categories - for instance I would like to display artists, playlists and radio, but not tracks or albums. I’ve tweaked the items shown in the menu but that doesn’t change what is loaded on the Home page.
Apologies if I’m missing something - this looks like a very comprehensive solution and these are minor wishes, but nice to have!
Thanks,
Steve.
I have Home Assistant installed on my NUC, along with the Music Assistant integration, which retrieves the music library from Navidrome. Navidrome is running in a Docker container on an RPI4. For playback, I use Maxi Music Player within Home Assistant.
Everything works fine, except that Maxi Music Player does not display cover images for playlists in the library view. This issue only affects playlists that were created in Navidrome and imported by Music Assistant. Music Assistant itself displays all covers correctly. Other playlists, such as those created manually in Music Assistant or imported from Spotify or Tidal, display covers without any issues.
Interestingly, when I start playing a playlist, Maxi Music Player correctly displays the cover images for individual tracks. The issue occurs only in the library section when browsing media to select a playlist for playback.
I should also mention that the cover images have appeared correctly about two or three times, but unfortunately, I don’t know what triggered it. However, after restarting Home Assistant, the images disappeared again.
Do you have any suggestions on how to ensure that these playlist covers are consistently displayed?
I can confirm that Spotify deauthenticates my MA instance after about 2 hours, and then I have to manually reauthenticate. I get these errors on the log when that happens:

For me, 2.4.1 isn’t working at all and I forgot to back up 2.4, so I’ve rolled back to 2.3.6 on my production system. Home Assistant Yellow running 2025.3.0B0, in case that’s relevant.
Okay - if you don’t use it, nevermind, but I assume someone has programmed it to recognize certain folders, named in a particular way. I just need to know the pattern and will adopt it.
Every time I think that I understand what MA is, I soon realize that it’s not what I thought (or, more typically, that it’s more than I thought). So I’m hoping someone can enlighten me here:
If I run a Bluesound Node (which has some built-in streaming support, like Tidal) and I run Music Assistant (through Home Assistant), then when I want to listen to a stream, say Tidal, is that stream coming out of MA or the Bluesound Node? Or am I missing a key concept and that’s a meaningless question?
I note that the Bluesound Node supports Spotify only via Spotify Connect while in MA it’s a direct connection, and the Bluesound Node doesn’t support Apple Music (except obliquely via Airplay 2) whereas Apple Music is native in MA (although, as noted in an earlier post, apparently not in high-res audio yet). So what’s the point of having a Bluesound Node in the mix at all, versus something like a Raspberry Pi streamer? Assuming a good enough DAC bolted to RPi, does the Bluesound Node add anything?
Looking at what a Bluesound Node is just now it seems to only output to Bluesound players and can connect physically to another amplifier. If this is all you have then seems great as it gets good reviews.
However, if you look at the picture here Music Assistant - Music Assistant you will see a large number of possible music providers (the inputs) and a good number of possible players (the outputs).
So if you want to bring together all whole array of different inputs and outputs then MA is for you and you don’t need the Bluesound Node.
If you only have Bluesound players or just have the one amplifier and only have the BluOS supported music providers then the node looks great.
