Naming things in Home Assistant, shaped by your feedback

This decision to mandate how my entities are named is really frustrating. I had to rollback this version upgrade for now because it’s going to take me days to sort all of this mess out. Most of my entity names are mangled garbage like “Master Bedroom Bedroom Light”. If I want a somewhat “sane” entity name, I have to enable the “main device” toggle. Enabling the “main device” toggle overwrites my entity name with the garbage name from the device, so now I have “Smart RGBTW Bulb” as the entity name. I can’t change the device name because HASS won’t let me for some reason, even for devices from integrations like Matter, where HASS should be in complete control of the device name. I’m not sure where to go from here, this feels like where I stop upgrading and just sit at 2026.10.x forever.

This is a really confusing and frustrating forced change to how I use HASS and manage the names of my entities. It feel like it’s a departure from giving the community freedom and flexibility and is instead forcing everyone to use one allowed workflow. I don’t really want to use areas. I think the whole device vs entity thing just introduces so much unnecessary complexity and headaches like this. I think you’re about to have a lot of very confused and upset community members as less technical folks are going to be completely lost with this. I know you guys won’t revert this change as that’s not how this org seems to work for things like this, so I guess I’ll just have to suck it up and waste a bunch of my time trying to figure out how to hack this into something remotely usable again. Or stay stagnant and unpatched, which sucks almost as bad.
