New Google maps device tracker issue?

Yeah, my dummy didn’t need to reciprocate the sharing either, just activate that damned toggle that din’t show up on screen the first time around

I’m having similar issues getting this working. Here are my steps:

  • Create brand new dummy account to be used by HA, 2FA not enabled
  • Shared location from my main account with said dummy account
  • Added in login credentials (I used a !secret tag in my instance) and restarted.

The .google_maps_location_sharing.cookies file was created in /config, but all I got from HA was the error “Could not open pickle file, either file does not exist or no read access.”. No traceback, no nothing.

According to the Device Activity page on my dummy account HA has not even attempted to log in. Nothing has appeared in the Device Activity page and there is nothing pending approval. No entries are appended to my known_devices.yaml.

Any thoughts?

The only thing I can think of is are you totally positively absolutely sure that you activated location sharing (and not just for some time, select allways). In fact open google maps app with your main acct logged in and triple check by tapping the avatar icon of your dummy.

Location sharing is definitely on. When I log into my dummy HA account I can see my main account no problem.

Dummy account itself doesn’t have real time location since it’s just used to monitor my main account, correct?

Nah dummy doesn’t need to activate shit, I meant tapping the avatar icon of your dummy in the location sharing part of the google maps app menu not in the map itself. I’m sorry my English is not that good as to not cause confusion.

No worries. I set up the location sharing from the Maps app on my phone in the first place. It’s set up as ongoing rather than on a timer and is pulling through to the dummy account OK. Problem seems to be HA talking to the account.

OK I’ve managed to get it to sign in, looks like it can’t handle passing the password through secrets.yaml for some reason.

The first time I restarted HA I still got the error, but when I restarted it again it worked, presumably because the new .google_maps_location_sharing.cookies file was already there.

Oh man that happened to me also but I didn’t think it was happening to you too. !secret is too fickle a mistress. Anyway, glad you got it working and now, onwards to the next unsolvable issue!

FWIW, I’m passing both username and password from my secrets file, so that definitely works. Didn’t read the whole thread, but I did have some hiccups getting this working, which I just did a few days ago for the first time. It took multiple restarts, but eventually it seemed happy.

FYI, No issues here with secrets either.

My Config:

- platform: google_maps
  username: !secret google_maps_location_sharing_username
  password: !secret google_maps_location_sharing_password

I have checked and double checked. But I just can’t seem to get this to work.

I have similar issues as described above.

Dummy account made
Shared my location to the dummy account
Config Setup is correct
Cookie is made
No 2FA setting

But nothing happens. No device trackers in states. Im Just stumped.

Any suggestions or work arounds would be appreciated

Do you see any google devices in the known_devices.yaml?

No, nothing shows up.

However, I found this issue tracker. Which points that its an issue when using hass.io

I’m trying to get this working with a “disposable” account on one of my Google Apps accounts, yet it doesn’t even appear to authenticate.

does it support @mycustomdomain.com ?

I’m running Hassbian 0.82.0
