I was about to purchase an i5 Nuc to run Home Assistant…but now that they are being discontinued is it still a good idea to get one? …or should I purchase something else? Thoughts?
–I have smart, voice controlled heated floors; thermostatic showers; and kitchen faucet…all my lights and most switches are smart along with with the thermostat, vacuum, garage doors, and many of the outlets. All curtains are controlled by smart devices and the TVs all have synced lights. I have both indoor and outdoor cameras and I just ordered a few ai facial and gesture recognition cameras…etc.
I am a complete sucker for anything that can be automated…so I definitely want something more powerful than a rpi…that can continue to expand with the available tech.
(I am new to Home Assistant, and after reading a lot of these posts, I realize many will think someone like me should start with a rpi…but I joyously anticipate Home Assistant consuming most of my free time once I get started…and truly want something stronger than a rpi 4…and hope to eventually use Frigate.)
Thoughts? Is it stupid to buy something that is about to be discontinued?
I took the “advice” on here and started with 3B+ which at the time was the best you could get. After 2-3 years of upgrading many things around my house I realized that my Pi wasn’t going to cut it anymore.
I have made some great decisions for home automation, and I have so bad decision as well that are evidenced by the box of stuff I have at home that I will never use again.
Buying a NUC was easily the best decision I made.
I didn’t hear that they are being discontinued, but I may go and grab a couple just to have them around as they are great little machines.
There are lots of SFF desktops, typically sold off as surplus from corporate small desktops (think banks or call centres) with lots of CPU and low cost:
Dell and Lenovo are just two manufacturers - and guess what this message is being typed on? A ThinkCentre running Linux.
