I didn’t have any wireless door sensors so I improvised using a spare SonOff. I’d previously modified all the SonOffs I’ve got to have GPIO 4 accessible. I now have 2 GPIO pins 2 - 3.3V and 2 - GNDs to use for sensors and still use the existing relay. Using the Tasmota firmware really opens these little guys up to a lot of different uses.
I used an old RJ45 keystone jack to make switching sensors fairly easy. With the pinout label on the back of the device, I don’t have to remember how I wired it up. Although I tried to use existing wire standards to make it easier.
The mousetrap is simple enough to understand. Open circuit sends MQTT message “Trap1 OFF”, Closed circuit sends “Trap1 ON” then it’s just a matter of adding it to HA and setting up any automations.
I bought 4 victor smart mouse traps. All 4 are back at the factory they came from. Pieces of sh*t. I was able to get them connected very easily and they seemed ideal. But all 4 of them would not stay connected for 24 hours and would go unavailable. Tech support’s suggestion was that i set my wifi to 2.4 ghz only…permanently. Not happening. I sent them back after i researched more and found others were having the same issue with connectivity.
I have several and have never had an issue.
It is good to be aware that they only report once every 24hrs unless there is an event then it is immediately reported. If they go over 24 hours without reporting then the batteries are likely low.
I did have high hopes for these things, but they just didn’t work for me. I placed the traps in a drop ceiling that was probably 20 ft at most away from the router with a stud wall in between. I don’t feel like that would be an incredible distance for signaling. The batteries were brand new. I was aware of the 24 hr reporting thing…and they were dropping out of the app, not even home assistant at that point…so i really don’t know, I just didn’t have a good experience at all.
Currently I’m pursuing trying out Elexa Dome Mouse traps, so far they have come with it’s own challenges with z-wave and using an Aeotec dongle, but once i get it set up correctly i feel like it will yield a better result. I already like the sensor reporting that show up in the integration. But there is little to no documentation on what things mean or do for the integration; which i find a little frustrating.
Honestly, I got tired of trying to DIY it and I hadn’t found a decent smart trap. I ended up buying a humane mouse trap and set an old Wyze type camera running Defang that sends motion alerts to telegram.
