Still happy for 3.
Based on the price given for 30+VAT ill be interested in 2 however if we can get the price closer to the £15 point I’ll have 3.
Just curious, was ordering 30 where the price reached its lowest or would we save more going for say 50 or 100 ?
Sorry folks please bear with me, have a few family issues…
In brief, there have been a lot of messages to try and clarify the quotes I’ve received. Every time there has been a price increase and when quieried the reply I received has been “Noted” and no explanation of clarification.
I’ve also got clear quotes for 20, 30 and 40 units and the unit costs do not decrease significantly between 30 and 40. Once I return to this I think I’ll go for 40 and take the risk of selling them all.
Taking into account shipping costs, exchange rates, VAT, etc, the unit cost to get the boards to my doorstep I estimate as, for 30 is £26.50 and for 40 £24.75 (with a bit of rounding). SHipping from me per order £5.
I just don’t have a good feeling about this transaction with PCBWay and I have some personal stuff to deal with. Please bear with.
Just to fill in some info, to get the quotes I had to download the files from PCBWay, zip them and send them back to PCBWay, the person I was dealing with didn’t seem to understand that this is something they’ve built before and likely to again. It could be that the person I was dealing with didn’t have great knowledge of their systems but the whole process to get to where I am today was all a bit strange and awkward.
I’d be in for 2 at £15 each plus P&P, if you want to start a list of interested parties.
Also very interested if this is still on! Would be after 3-4 units!
As usual, I couldn’t wait and ordered 5 from PCBWay for $182.
No duty payable and they arrived on Monday.
I have three configured and working just as expected.
Once I’ve finished evaluating I may need another 5.
The only difference I’ve noticed to the Google is that the microphone sensitivity and speed of wakeword recognition is a little slower. However I’ve also, unlike the Google, not had any false triggers.
Otherwise, so far so good.
That’s interesting. I tested the atom echo and wake word detection was pretty terrible, even in aggressive mode, which I put down to the mic being rubbish so it’s interesting to hear that the onju is better.
They are chalk and cheese.
The only issue I have is that it doesn’t work correctly as a media player and I can’t use TTS.
It’s the same on all three so far and I have firmware from 2 sources with the same result.
As a voice assistant it works OK.
I’ll take two for definite and price seems good to me.
I’m interested in this too. Minimum two at the moment.
Sorry people for various personal reasons I’m dropping out from trying to organise this. Too many family funerals and estates to be wound up I just don’t have the enthusiasm I did when I started this.
If someone want to take the mantle use this thread or start your own and link here.
Good luck everyone.
Chris
Thanks to some help on Github, I now have the TTS working.
The device can’t listen and speak at the same time, which means that, to use TTS, the Wake Word switch has to be turned off prior to the TTS request and then turned back on afterwards.
I’m sure a script can simplify this.
I’m not sure if licensing would be a problem but hopefully someone ends up buying a load and sells them individually on eBay or something.
The ordering from PCBway is really straightforward and didn’t take long for my 5 to arrive.
Around £30 each. I wasn’t too impressed with the quantity price breaks.
Are they worth it?
The PCBs are fine and the fit into the Nest Mini is excellent.
Performance is nearly there in comparison the the original Nest - but not quite. I still find myself shouting at them.
However, no false triggers.
The complexity of PCBway isn’t really the problem for me, it’s more that I just want one and not 5!
When ordering, are all the defaults on the order OK to go with?
Blockquote Edge connector: No
Surface Finish: Immersion gold (ENIG)
Solder Mask: Green
Silkscreen: White
If those came up as the defaults - then Yes.
I didn’t make any changes to my order. You can change the board colour or screen print colour if you want but it usually adds cost and time.
When I placed my order there were a couple of components that were not in stock and they suggested substitutions, which I accepted.
I had to wait for order approval, but once approved, they were dispatched quickly.
I would order more but I’m considering making a POE version as it would suit my need better.
Other than that it’s all straightforward.
I’ve been quoted $204 for 5 shipped. Which shipping method did you use? I may wait for your POE version, how is that looking?
I have just received 5 assembled Onju voice boards from PCBway and 3 of them are defective.
The same firmware is flashed into all of them and in each case (x3) the RGB LEDs do not work or some show blue and not white. They are sending my some replacement LEDs, but I would try finding a better quality LED part for the BOM.
