Patio Door Lock

Hey guys - I have a patio door that my kids are always forgetting to lock (close is not an issue…) and I was starting to think about how could I make my normal lock smarter by adding a sensor on the locking mechanism, but I’m not really sure how to approach this. I thought about adding a reed switch, but I don’t think I could fit everything that is required in lock handle enclosure… any one have any ideas?

My handle looks like this

Tiny reed switches are available. I used a couple of these to make e-brakes for a motorised mountain bike https://au.element14.com/coto-technology/ct05-3050-g1/switch-reed-5w-spst-smd/dp/1081694
But getting an ESP board in there might be unpossible. How about mounting a small project box above the handle?

Or a zwave door switch . Use the device’s external contacts to your custom tiny reed switch and magnet on the lock mechanism. It would look reasonably unobtrusive, available in a bunch of colours to match.

Hmmm. The idea of a zwave door switch could be really interesting. Thanks!

What about a xiaomi door/window sensor? Very small and versatile. Of course you need some zigbee setup, either the xiaomi hub or something like zigbee2mqtt.

Take a look here - it might give you a few low-tech ideas:

I wonder if you solve your issue elegantly?
