I’ve got HA running in a Oracle VirtualBox under Windows 10, and the performance is strange. Sometimes controlling a Z-wave device is quick, other times (or maybe other devices) is really slow (like minutes). I don’t mind putting HA on a RPI, if that is going to be a much better performer.
I’m also looking at the Nabu Casa Green and Yellow boxes. Is it worth it to get the Yellow box instead of the green. I have no problem putting it together and installing everything, as I’ve done if before with another RPI for my 3D printer, but don’t want to buy work for myself unless there’s a reason.
i started w/ virutalbox. it always needed a bit of maintenance and i saw lags here and there. however i never saw multi-minute lags like you described. i’m not sure that’s a vbox perf issue. feels like maybe something else going on. that said, i did move to a pi and a green. i’m def happier with them there. ended up being more reliable for me. they’re both fine. if you’re tech enough i’d go w/ a straight pi. green and yellow are good for getting a pretty good preconfigured setup. but the pi only took an extra 15 minutes and i can configure it more. that said, green & yellow help fund the ha team a bit…
Hi, Virtualbox for me was go to solution. After I integrated zigbee dongle it started to be super strange. I was not able to restart/reboot/shutdown the host clearly. It always had to be killed via task manager - I am on Win11. After a week or so it was just unusable for me as I had to babysit it everyday repeatedly just to check if everything is running or not. It is easier to set up and auto start it after power outage or whatever. But two weeks ago I was just so frustrated I moved from VB to VMware and life is much more easier. I was thinking about to get Green/Yellow as I thought my mini computer is the issue but it was the VB. Here is a great manual I used. Since than, no issues, lags or restarting just to make it work. Just the autostart is a bit of a mystery to me so far.
Yep, that was the tricky part :). I went throught the link in the manual which redirected me to broadcom.com where I had to created an account. Only after that I found a post somewhere here on forum that there is a free version available. VMware Workstation Pro: Now Available Free for Personal Use - VMware Workstation Zealot This link will get you to blog part of vmware webpage where is the link to broadcom.com again as it is a their product anyway. You still need to have an account to download it. Or use the link above if you know that webpage. I don’t know that web so I went the “official” way.
