Please help with choosing installation method for a new install

Hi,

(I’m a complete noob to Home Assistant and Raspberry Pi.)
Wondering what’s the best way to get HA running on a dedicated Raspberry Pi 3?

Criteria:

  • Z-wave
  • Simple to upgrade
  • Straightforward install
  • Wifi
  • Possibly other systems like MQTT
    (The must-haves are Z-wave, and simple upgrades.)

There seem to be several ways to install: amongst which are HASSbian and All-in-one, manual install, installing into a virtual environment.

How to choose??

It really depends on your experience and skill level. I’ve been using unix in one form or another since the mid 80s, so i do a manual install. I know whats installed, where, and how, but I’m a little bit of a control freak when it comes to my systems. I have dual monitors so i can open more xterms.

As a fellow noob not too long ago, my vote is Hassbian. Simply upload the OS to an SD card and pop it in. Also comes with scripts to install extras like zwave, although you’ll need a z wave dongle for that extra to work.

If you are asking that’s a bit of a hint the hassbian is probably for you.

You can always change later to a different method.

I also find that on gitter and in the forums most people use hasbian so you might get better help with that method as well.
