Presence Detection with Mobile Phone App But Less Battery Drain?

Hi everyone,

Is there any way to enable presence detection with the mobile phone app without enabling full location access which drains the battery?

e.g. Make HA do some tasks depending on people is present or not.

Thanks in advance.

use the wifi connection sensor instead of GPS?

Like this?

Presence detection using mobile phone’s reported wifi connection name? - Configuration - Home Assistant Community (home-assistant.io)

something like that, just need to find something that suits your own needs. Personally speaking i find the default android location tracking settings battery friendly.

Really? Since the app asks for full time background access so I assume it’s not battery friendly…

I’d like to try router integration (OpenWrt) as well, but not comfortable giving Home Assistant full admin access to the router…

Cheers.

Have you tried it yet? I use the mobile app on an iPhone 13 with full location accuracy and background refresh enabled and the battery still lasts more than a day.

Would recommend you actually test your assumption.
Who knows… you might find it totally fine.
